Despite being known throughout the industry,Dan and Dave have managed to remain true independents(underground).
determinedly rejecting commercial cliche's,and not giving up their fierce idiosyncratic vision.

which is exactly the way the Coen brothers have been described through the years.

I wanted to write this because ive always felt the magic and the film industry go hand in hand.
corruption on both sides.
mainstream and independent.
visionaries and hollywood hacks.

well since im comparing them to the coens ill say this...
even though their movies are financed and distributed by major studios they have still remained(and are considered) true independents.
the difference between mainstream and underground is what you do.
they bucks dont do commercial magic or use wands or do series of little amusing "tricks".

That is without a doubt the greatest lie of a rivalry ever told.

And what are you hoping to accomplish with this obtuse analogy anyway? Who are you trying to impress?

Uh, actually he's right that film and magic go hand in hand. The earliest film editing techniques were developed by magicians. Check out Georges Melies (I think that's how it's spelled).

EDIT: Yeah, check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zs5BBaNJ6mg&feature=related

I agree that magic and filmmaking go hand-in-hand: how do we performers get our work to be so widely known? Videos on the internet and DVDs.

But, visualartist, what exactly is the point of this thread? You leave no question nor final comment at the end of your original post.

You can't be an independent if you make movies through a major studio.

the difference between mainstream and underground is what you do.

No it's not, kid.

they bucks dont do commercial magic or use wands or do series of little amusing "tricks".

Neither does Cyril, and he's huge in Japan. Same with David Blaine and Criss Angel. Both incredibly mainstream, and neither one of them fit the stereotype of a birthday magician.

I'm sorry, what?

First of all, don't presume to lecture me on the history of film.

Second, that's not what I was saying. I was saying that the whole mainstream vs indie meme is bullsh*t.

It's such a chore being smarter than everybody else.

sorry,i really just wanted to know if people agreed with my statement.

And you completely disregard anyone who disagrees with you, thus defeating the purpose of discussion.

This isn't the first time you've made this comparison. And the last time you made it, people told you that you were full of it.

Steerpike (who's now my hero) just owned you all. I'm so tired of people who pretend to act intelligent to impress others. The original post made no sense. This topic is complete rubbish.

Anyway, I love you Steerpike. You may win my favourite person award.

dude.it was just a simple compare and contrast.
no one is trying to impress anybody.
and if you dont like a topic, then why continue reading it?or even getting involved.
complaining or talking back will get you no where.

Yet you keep fanning the fire...

Easiest way to let an argument die is to stop participating in it. Or come up with 100% indisputable proof that you are correct. And seeing as how this an opinion topic, that route isn't possible.

of course.your right.I have the proof that the coens are indeed independent but this topic wasnt even about them being independent so i didnt bother to write.(and all the proof would take ages to write.hah)

It was a bad one, at that. Dan and Dave are the epitome of mainstream. You can't give me one reason why they're 'independent', because they're simply not.

Why read it or get involved? I'm tired of bull****. There's so much on magic forums, mostly because magicians love to believe that if they're doing magic, then they're doing an art, which makes them artsy, which makes them intelligent. This usually leads to horrible, poorly thought out posts where the poster is trying his best to catch someone's eye and come across as enlightened, or whatever you want to call it.

I'm not trying to be mean, just frank. The topic is a bad one, simply put.

So you just want people to agree with you?

No you don't.

However, this topic is about an analogy to independent film, which you have repeatedly demonstrated you have no knowledge of. You're just making it up as you go along.

This renders the analogy useless. It amounts to little more than celebrity gossip for magicians. Then again, that seems to be the lifeblood of this forum...
