Is This What We Have Made Magic Become?

This is why I stopped doing effects that are revealed on YouTube.
I just do ones that are on old classic books where not much people see the effects on.

I mostly perform out of books, as well... and like I said earlier- I'm not worried about them looking up the effects, because I know there's like a .00000001% chance of them finding it- I'm more worried about the fact that I got that reaction in the first place.

Great stories.

As for the youtube exposure, here are my thoughts, which have not been posted in any "youtube exposure thread":

A layperson will find it almost impossible to look up a trick online via youtube (or any site like it). There are several things that I believe affect this:

1) Names of tricks - Say I performed Biddle Trick for someone, who decided to look it up on youtube. How would they POSSIBLY search it? "my card goes into deck that's been in my hand the entire time trick tutorial"? "teleporting card"?

Easy solution - don't mention the name of the trick or the magician who created it (when performing to laymen spectators).

2) Names of sleights - I've had a few people who are absolutely sure they know what I'm doing, as we all have (I affectionately call these people 'idiots'). For example, the most common sleight that laypeople have heard of/discover by a realistic deduction is the double lift. Although, in all my years of performing, I have NEVER had a spectator call it a "double lift/turnover".

Easy solution 2 - Don't mention the names of the sleights you use. (I.e., saying "and now all we do is a pass, then a Lee Asher Diving Board Double..." would be bad. Go join the "idiots".)

Kind of haphazardly written, I'm using my cell phone. Just thought I'd put my one-and-a-half pennies in.

i live for magic
ive gotton that a lot and i hate it cause layman dont understand how much hardwork practise and consentration it takes to do magic. I once got a spectater who went to my school tell me after a performence, in front of my intire audience!, how easy it was to do magic and if he realy wanted to could learn any trick and do it better than i could.(where do they get the gull). So i challanged him and said id like to see him do any trick at all better than me so he went home got some crap off youtube and came to me (during another performence in front of my audience) and attempted to do a simple rubber band trick and failed terribly and my entire audience laughed at him and told him how stupid he was for chalanging me (cause after he failed i did it perfectly) and he or no one in that group said word one about how easy our art is.

Performance Story Number 1

We were inside the auditorium thingy where we were having a reunion. I was performing for my Step-Grandpa (one of my biggest fans!), and a few other members of the family. I pattered about Blackjack, and dealt down two-twos. I split them into 4 Aces, and then "magically" produced the Four Jacks. At this point I looked up and there were now at least fifteen people surrounding me. I got a little bit nervous, but I kept going.

I asked if my Step-Grandpa would like to keep the Jacks or the Aces, and he said the Jacks, so I set them beside him, and kept the Aces for myself. One by one, the Aces switched out for the Jacks... each time a little more visually and better. But, at the climax of the effect, the Four Jacks then reverse the effect, and change back into the Four Aces, leaving the Jacks where they were at the start of the effect.

This effect got pretty darn good reactions, and I would have kept going... but the Polka Dancing had started, and seeing as how I was performing mostly for old people- I kinda sorta lost my crowd. Oh well. Still had fun.

hey Ad, let me just ask you, is this routine actually Gregory Wilson's Phoenix split followed by reset with a hook? i was looking over my dvd's of him and i saw this fitted your description perfectly! i find it a great routine too!

Yup- I love Greg's material, and perform as much of it as I can. I just don't do the Jack production the way he does it- I wish I could, though! So I just replaced it with a different production that works pretty well, too.

cool, keep it rockin'!. Why don't you perform the jack production though? i know its hard, and i guess it all comes down to how much time you put into it, but it just looks so...(excuse my wording) "magical"! ive almost go it down, just a few details here and there that need sorting out.

I don't do it because I keep forgetting to practice it, so I don't have it down yet! And I can't palm worth crap (yet!), so I'm just waiting for the perfect time to release it onto the world. :D
