Today I decided to post a thread about something that happened to me...

when I first started to do magic, I decided to get some nice decks from E (that bundle with 6 different decks) and started to use them and so on...

then I buy 2 dvds, sponge balls, a book, loops, and thumbtip...

then I buy the Loops DVD,Raven, decks and some other things that I can´t remember

finally I bought the M5 and some other things...

But I didn´t realize that I was spending to much money in things that maybe I wont use in a good time

I started to trust more in gimmicks and props than in my abilities, that at the time wasn´t the best... so a time has to pass, first to pay the money for this stuff and eventually the props and the gimmicks became useless...so I I decided to stop buying stuff until I got more money, first I became doubtful of myself because I thought that without loops or some other things I wasn´t gonna be able to become a good magician...and eventually I stop performing for a time

but then I took my old deck of cards, a red bycicle and started to practice my old tricks the first ones that got me into magic in the first place and then I decided to get back to basics and learn from 0....

A time from that day has passed and now I´m so great in my sleight of hand that I can´t believe some things that I can do now (I was able to perfect the Clipshift in 2 days) I rely so much in my abilities and my presentation that sometimes I just need a deck of cards and a sharpie to rock the house for a few hours...

when I found myself without money to buy the new stuff, the new dvd,the new deck and some other new stuff...I felt helpless and sad, but now that was the best that could happen to me...

.

Everything was going nice unti that point... Clipshift perfected in 2 days? I have 7 months with mine and its far from perfect.

You should learn some humble lessons, let your actions speak for themselves....

Actaully im glad that you dont need money to improve, that's something a lot of us needs to learn.

it is tempting to get the new tricks that are always coming out. i always ask myself "is it worth it". most of the time the answer is no.

Well said. I never spent loads of money on DVDs I usually wait about 3 or months before I buy a new DVD, and the next one I'm going to buy is surfaced (probably won't be getting anything for aaaages after that until I can perfect the clipshift.)

I will confess however, that I do spend a lot of money on decks of cards such as Tally Hos and Arrcos.

Having a big wallet full of money won't make you a good magician. Hours and hours of practice a day however will.

I used to spend all my money on magic, so I have a lot of old stuff. Now I spend a lot of my money on gas money and things that I actually need. So I haven't actually purchased magic in 3+ months, now. And even then, it was just a 1on1 or something small.

Not having the money I used to have to spend on magic has forced me to look back on my old stuff, and I've found some real gems in stuff that I already own. It also forced me to practice the stuff I already know, so my presentation, sleights, and overall performances became better.

So if you ever find your performances slacking... stop buying so much magic! It helps, trust me.

Wait you perfected the clipshift in two days.. YEAH RIGHT. I know that it can take anywhere from 5 months to a year or two to get it down good enough.

We use the word "perfect" way to freely these days. Most people, saying "perfect" actually mean that they "started to be able to do" a sleight. Nobody has anything perfect. Nobody. There may be people close, but nobody has ever perfected anything.

That said, yes. A lack of money can lead you to be a better magician. So can simple practice.

i actually believe him i mean he didnt "perfect it" but he got it pretty good its not that hard of a move it just takes time to get good angle and live performance.

when I say perfect, means perfect to layman

I know that magicians take a lot of time with the clipshift, but you also know that the clipshift is not that hard (not like the S.W.E. Shift and the G.OA.T. change) but in my case, the clipshift become good enough to be invisible at the eyes of a layman in 2 days...
but to be honest the clipshift wasn´t so hard to me, but other moves that are very simple are very hard for me...I have never perfected the "hot shot" and the "Diving board" and I just don´t know why, but since this moves are not essential for magic I never bothered to use a lot of my time perfecting them... with the clipshift is different
still work to be done... there is always work to be done

Let me just make sure I have this right: you're saying the Loops, thumbtip, and Raven you bought were useless? We're talking standard utility items that many, many magicians use to create a number of routines?

I don't know, it seems more like you bought a wealth of material and then kept plowing through it without putting any effort into things. You don't need to "go back to basics," you just need to stop spending money every chance you get and work on what you buy.

I said that I was relying a lot on gimmicks and props, and that the lack of money helped me to check on everything and refine my sleight of hand, yes it was a misunderstanding that they were useless but that all the magic should not rely on them, you will never know when you are going to get asked for some magic

actualy i felt the same way wen i buy a raven, because a didint have the timeto learn how to use them right, so for me they are useless.

At least for now.

So instead of performing great feats of magic with a thumb tip, loops and a book(!) youd rather just do card tricks? I think you went a step back there son.
And you dont need a great deal of money to do illusions with other things than cards. And they require just as much skill if not more than executing a card sleight.

Yes, you should still use those gimmicks that you bought, their great gimmicks.
