There was a thread not to long ago about if you carry cards with you all the time. Alot of people said no, and some said yes. This got me thinking.

Given the scenario that you are going somewhere, and you KNOW you will end up performing, or you are going to a walk around show, or anything like that, what do you have in your pockets, and where?

This is how I would be set up:

Front right pocket: phone and TT
Front left pocket: car keys with mini sharpie on the key ring (you guys should try this it is awesome and saves pocket space), along with my gimmicked quarter for smashed and a pencil, and MAYBE a gimmick for Wrapture that is on "Hardcore"
Left rear pocket: Deck of cards set up for Blindsided, in a clip, and some half dollars (not always)
Right rear pocket: wallet
Left wrist: rubberbands for stairway, raw linkage, (hopefully soon some will be there for TRANSIT), and a rubberband for the effect on sankey's Hardcore.

All this is ONLY if I know I am going to perform for alot of people and/or be performing ALOT. With all that stuff, I could litterally go for over an hour LOL.

Anyways, what do you carry when you know you are going to perform?

there have been threads like this before but its been awhile so i'll answer anyways... lately my pockets contain the following everyday than after that i'll post a list for performing

-deck of cards or two in porpers, usually one deck for magic and one for flourishing.
-magic deck contains a few duplicates, sometimes a double backer, and a breather crimped card
-coin purse with 4 walking liberty halves, and i have 3 morgans with me
-usually anywhere from 3 to 5 sharpies
-SMOKE Gimmick
-Rubberbands
-Business Card holder with cards within. (surprise)
-Pen
-Superman Coin Bend plus quarters
-Usually my zippo
-Greed bill in my wallet
-pocket knife
-cell phone
-flash paper in wallet and prepped in zippo

for performances i might throw in a notepad for some mentalism, some balloons for pressure, possibly my ring flight, and a couple more extra dupes for things like TORN, French Kiss or any effect where a card is ruined and a deck needs a replacement.

Also occasionally double stick tape or wax.. but rarely. Another rare carry-on is my Linking Mints gimmick

I used to carry a static gimmick in my deck but after i riffle shuffled the last one to death i stopped

the general setup for everyday is this.

In jeans, front right pocket = cell phone, superman, coin purse
front left pocket=quarters, sharpies, business card holder, SMOKE Gimmick, Pen, Superman
Back left pocket= Deck of Cards (also sometimes empty if the cards are in my jacket)
Back right pocket=wallet(with greed and flash paper) knife, and sharpie

right wrist=Livestrong bracelet over rubberbands.

Belt holster for the zippo cause im cool like that. and the last one got ruined in my pocket.

In a performance setting all the extra stuff would go in either a jacket or khaki pants pockets.

its actually not the much. The coin purse is no bigger than an oreo and has all the coins in it. Small cell and the superman is next to nothing.

The right pocket is a little fuller but not really, the sharpies and pen are clipped on the edge of the pocket with the Business Card holder lying in the pocket and the quarters just roaming free with the superman for easy access.

the rest is completely unobstrusive. simple, organized and not bulky at all. Plus i dont have to look like a tool with a Pro-carrier.

as for performing i would never carry all those extra things at once. just one or two at a time which usually go in a inner jacket pocket

Half a dozen index cards, half a dozen coin envelopes and a pen is my standard thing. Inside jacket pocket. Keeps me busy for about an hour.

Depends what I feel like, though. I don't tend to carry much, which means that I have space for additional props if I need to, without cluttering my pockets. I hate having full pockets.

Depends where I'm performing too, and to whom. There are also items I'll substitute in for the above - say, a notepad instead of index cards, perhaps a deck of playing cards. Add in a boon for good measure.

Can I borrow your twins?

Is this for like a gig or for hanging out?

Casual setting/everyday

Right front pocket - Cell phone, car keys, Sharpie, and Zippo
Right front mini pocket - TT loaded w/ mis-made bill
Left Front Pocket - WOW Gimmick in card wallet, JVC Picsio HD camera, sometimes Balloons for pressure, sometime a deck of cards (set up for Chicago Opener).
Back Left Pocket - Wallet with business cards, EB2, 5-and-1 Transpo, (sometimes my own effects Ca$h or Counterfeit, sometimes 3-4 JFK Halves), prediction set up for SympatheticInk
Back Right Pocket - Deck of cards (typically set up with Twilight Angels, Pip Streak, and maybe one or two gaff tricks, or dupes)
Right wrist - 2-5 rubberbands, or loops

I also wear three rings (which I can use for De'Ring or Ring Thing if no one has one I can borrowed) and a fedora (which has a pin in it for Pressure

When I had my CCK's, I'd carry that... once I get my custom sets I may carry one set. Also sometimes I'll toss in spongeballs or rope for Fiber Optics in my back pocket.

Also I normally keep two decks in my saddle bag and if I don't want to carry the sponges, rope, or balloons on me I'll leave them in there.

ok.. school bag is different, but on a day to day basis... thats a man purse.

And as for the indiana jones thing. Harrison Ford took down the empire with teddy bears, he beat nazi's with a whip, he was the president. He can do anything including pull off the satchel looking manly. Heck he could use a tampon and still be more man than Chuck Norris and Sylvester Stallone combined. But everybody else... man purse.

Buuuut on the topic of magic, i think its always best to travel light, or at least appear to travel light. If you cant carry everything on your person without looking bulky, then your carrying to much.

I usually have

-1 deck of cards
- 1 sharpie
- a couple of dupes
-cell phone (not magic related)
-ipod touch (3 tricks)
-a couple of balloons for Pressure
- 3 to 4 rubberbands
- wallet
- Identity gimmick
- gimmick for coin bend

That's pretty much everything.

I go out with nothing but my two hands...

Though in partial seriousness. I usually just bring a deck of cards or two. One deck I'm not afraid of ripping, signing, burning, dismembering so on and so forth. The other a moderately new one for effects and whatnot. I don't really carry a lot around with me. On top of that maybe a rubber band or two, a few gimmicks, a dupe or two. With that and things I find around me I can go on for a decent amount of time (that's what she said).

I agree. I have a really, really nice backup / laptop case from Victorinox (swiss army knife people). It also has my ibuprofin, a book or two, 2-4 decks of cards, a hair brush, my nice nail clipping scissors, a good pair of every day scissors and even an emergency sewing kit. It's a man-purse. I refuse to be ashamed of it.

Man. Purse.

Between being a techie and a magic enthusiast, I can't help but sport the cargo pants.
  • TT
  • Deck of Bicycles
  • A set of 4 linking rings, about 4 inches in diameter, that my brother picked up at a dollar store.
  • "Special" wallet that I use for business cards as well.
  • Droid Eris with couple of things on it.
Plus all my trendy techie / webmaster gadgets. My wife still laughs every time she witnesses the grand unloading of the pockets.

If I know I'm actually going to do something, I bring my bags of tricks and a few extra balloons - sculpting style and round/party Balloons.
