    Continuing Magic

To throw in two more cents... People generally have more motivation to put in more time, effort, and care to learn something and perfect it when they've had to pay for it in some way. In my opinion, learning from YouTube is too easy and instant, whereas learning from a book that I've paid for...

    Derren Brown Clones

The following rant is given under the assumption that you and your friend primarily perform for laypeople, and not just other magicians. Uniqueness is not something that you work on, as it is bestowed upon you by others through comparison. Take two coin magicians. One only performs sleight of...

    Derren Brown Clones

I would support your friend. He sounds like he's thought about it and chosen this as his primary presentation angle. That said, I would also suggest to him that he read and actually learn what is considered scientific and factual about this sort of work. Anyone can patter about "body language"...

    Other Force

Things to consider when choosing your force: Time Spent - Does the selection process need to get done quickly? If so, maybe use a force where they only LOOK at a card instead of selecting one and having it returned. - If you want to emphasize the fair selection of the card because your effect...

Saturday Night Roundtable - Max Major!

Hey, thanks for answering my question on Instagram. I realize that I may have written it in a way that sounds like you could get the same effect from a Svengali deck. What I meant to ask in the above, is if a similar effect using a Svengali deck or some other type of tossed-out deck scenario...

    Stacks

Sorry, I just realised that I made a mistake. "Four Part Harmony" is in the Aronson Approach. Scott.

Saturday Night Roundtable - Max Major!

Hi Max, Omega looks awesome. When the effect was initially in development, did you consider simply using a Svengali or reverse Svengali deck (and "Major" cojones) to accomplish the effect? How does Omega address the possible problems inherent with this approach? Scott.

    Magic Movies

I totally agree! I just watched a movie called "Sleight" that was made in 2016. It was an hour and a half of my life that I'll never get back, but if you need another movie to watch, it does focus on a street magician, gang violence, and science(?). 77% on Rotten Tomatoes. Scott.

where can i learn an effect where it looks like your stopping your heart

This might interest you, though I haven't read it to tell you if it's quality or not. For the price it might be worth it. http://www.lybrary.com/5-ways-to-stop-your-pulse-p-820738.html

Can anyone tell me how to do this move?

Interesting thing to note- In his book "Totally Out of Control" on page 46 he calls this move the "For 4 For" switch, not the "4 for 4" switch. Scott.

I need a good number force

Try Page 107 of the Encyclopedia of Card Tricks- "DIACHYLON BOOK TEST. FORCING A NUMBER" for your large number. If you don't know what diachylon is, you can (a) read the entire chapter, or (b) substitute the word "magician's wax" in its place. Scott.

    Quick Question on Tenkai Pinch

I don't understand the scenario you're proposing. What's the emergency? Presumably, you'd have thoroughly practiced the sleight and examined it in a mirror or on video to the extent that you are comfortable with the look and feel of it before performing. The option that I gave in my previous...

    Stacks

This. Once you have memorized a stack, I recommend you read the book "Try The Impossible" by Simon Aronson. Specifically, his effect "Four Part Harmony". This will be the closest thing to real mind-reading with cards anyone can do. Scott.

    Quick Question on Tenkai Pinch

The position of the coin looks correct, but it's the angle of your hand to the camera that is the issue. Don't point your fingers at your spectators with the hand palm up. If you rotate your wrist inward so that your fingers point to a diagonal left (with your right hand) the second and third...

    Tricks with a svengali deck

It's long been my belief that the deceptive use of a svengali deck for forces, controls, and locations will always surpass the overt use of the deck.

    One Ahead

Hi David, It sounds like you're either suffering from Magician's Guilt, which is a common affliction suffered by prestidigitators who perform great effects with simple methods; or you're questioning the merits of the one-ahead principle due to it either being well-known or easily puzzled out...

Unpopular Opinion: Stage Magic is Harder Than Close Up

How is your ability to name magicians in close-up and on stage any indication of difficulty? There are fewer famous pole vaulters than sprinters, so by this logic, pole vaulting is harder than sprinting? What is your criteria for competence, proficiency (which means competence), and...
