    A quote to think about.

Interesting quotation. It's amazing the public persona/perception we receive from most of society. However, I will say that when I perform close up for 99% of my audience, I know that I have given them something special that they may only ever get a few times or that time only... in their life...

    Suitcase table

Did you see what you are looking for somewhere or was it just an idea you had? I'm just curious. There are definitely some companies out there that make great magic tables and such but you'll likely pay a pretty penny. I know I spent about $500 on my set up but I wouldn't change it for the...

    Suitcase table

I don't have plans but another way around that is to just buy a cheap suit case or metal case like the ones from Lowe's and Home Depot and then attach a music stand/drum stand to a circular mount which has been screwed into the side of the case. Just food for thought and a different avenue you...

Dear Professionals - Your Advice Please - My First Wedding Gig

You should consider the following: How many guests are attending? Figure out approximately how much time you'll have at each table. What is the seating arrangement? 60 inch round tables? Take 3 sets of 3 (A,B, & C) effects and rotate them as you hit each and every table. Also take one or two...

    Suggestions for the Future?

Completely off topic and not related to books, may I suggest trying to find a local IBM ring in your area or within an hour of driving. This is what helped me grow at a tremendous pace. Just being around 20-30 other magicians once a month, having meetings, jam sessions, bringing in lectureres...

What to do when a spectator asks to see your deck ???

Sounds like you and I use the same technique....ha ha. I too have ditched all effects that use gaffs or duplicate cards when performing and then kill them with the matching Bicycle ID towards the end after they "think" they have already handled the same deck. I love it!

    WHAT SHOULD I BUY??

It completely depends on what you are hoping to accomplish. If you are looking to fill a void in a show/performance then go with nest of wallets or vanishing coke bottle; however if you just perform casually are you seriously going to walk around with a nest of wallets or a vanishing coke bottle...

    Pinky count in dealers grip

The pinky count is very difficult for some people and is a "weird" finger movement when first learning it. Some magicians use the tip of their pinky up by the nail and others actually use the little pad of skin a bit lower. Just find what works best for you. Also, you can be pinky counting cards...

    Labeling your decks

That is exactly what I do. Light pencil on the inside flap. I've done it for 18 years and nobody has noticed.

Advice on building a few sets

I don't want to beat this horse to death as there are a lot of threads about developing sets (which I can look for later for you) but something to keep in mind is to try to choose material that allow you to end in the middle of the routine or set as you have no idea what types of interruptions...

    Magic Wedding Ring

Why does it have to be a magic wedding ring? I'm curious. Just get the PK ring that looks just like a white gold silver band and just put it on when going out to certain gigs. Or just wear your wedding ring and do Ring Thing by Garrett Thomas and some ring on string material.

    Click Bend Noise

Take half of your deck, flip it over and interweave (farrow) them into the remaining cards. Shuffle and spring the cards over and over which will then take out that click/bend noise. Yes, the cards will be face up into face down in a wide mixture; however it works :)

    Question about DoubleCross

I've been doing double cross for one week now and haven't had anyone feel the "move" however, I have had poor audience management skills and an angle issue that I didn't think about from a seated spectator. Lesson learned. This is why we perform things over and over and mess them up every way...

Question about the Pass, help please ??

Also keep in mind that 90% of the time there will be some talking, music, noise going on while performing. Another good thing to do is use your motion of your body and hands to disguise the pass. For example: Make eye contact with the spectator as your hands move forward at waist level (execute...

    What to do?

Sometimes I'll just wink and say, "Well...that is how some guys do it, but I do it a bit differently." And then I move right into my next effect without missing a beat.

    The Business of Magic

I will second The Approach by Jamie Grant. Great book especially for someone who is starting from square one or not a whole lot of experience under their belt yet. Everything else I have learned by direct conversation with magicians at conventions or at our IBM meetings. Be cautious though as...

On the hunt for a good gaff deck + instructional...

Harry Anderson's Gang of Four uses a nice little gaff/gimmick that leaves 4 spectators at a table scratching their head and plays nicely. It is in Bicycle riderbacks. Once you use your 12 gimmicks you are done though. You get everything you need for around $20.00.

    Playing Card Moderation

Much like Chris I can kill a deck in a day during the summer months in Ohio. Sweaty hands make them clump and they are pretty much trash after the gig. Typically I'll just toss them to a kid at the end of my set and they absolutely go nuts over them. Ha. During the winter months there are no...
