Back on the Saddle

Hey everyone, just wanted to say hi.

A few years ago i started to learn magic tricks in my spare time.
Mostly card tricks of sorts. After a year or so of learning i eventually lost the spark for the hobby. My reef aquarium and juggling took up most of my interest, but as of recently i have really enjoyed picking my old decks up and flourishing a bit. I was never very good, and have picked up the old copy of The Trilogy, as a start to learning things all over again.

I'm 18 now, and want to commit to learning new tricks again. Unfortunately in the years that i have been out, i have fallen behind on what is new and exciting! I really like un-gimiked effects. My style isn't the crazy criss angel style. I like to make my audience laugh and have a good time without doing a torn and restored or fire effect. I like gambling tricks and things like that.

Could anyone give me tips on starting back up? im brushing up on my sleights with born to perform. I am going to nibble through the trilogy, and i am learning the pass as well (disaster :D) Suggesting effects and dvd's that i may like would be nice. Needless to say, most of my audience is (will be) college students and family, so practical tricks are what i'm looking for.

Lastly, despite performing many times in high school, i still have very bad nerves. I shake and i mess up my patter, is there any way to get over it?

thanks!
Sam

Hey, I would suggest if you already don't have it, Stigmata by Wayne Houchin it has that Criss Angel-ish thing you might be looking for, its un-gimmick, is really practical trick, easy to learn and you learn 3 different variations in the DVD.

As for your nerves, the only way you can really get rid off them (not completely they might come from time to time, but by then you'll get used to them) are by just going out there to perform.

hope this helps =D

sorry if i was unclear, i meant that i want effects that aren't like that.

The way i see it is that people already know magic doesn't exist, i like to impress in a playful way. not like OMFG i can cut my arm open and find ur ace of spades. yeah, like that.

thanks

Lmao
Its my fault, I misunderstood you anyways something complete opposite what I said is Chris Kenners Totally Out Of Control. The book has many affect that are easy and non-Criss Angel-ish, if you don't have the money like some people to buy the book at the moment COUGH*COUGH**ME**COUGH*COUGH you can check the one-on-one section there are some of the trick from the book up there and they have so got tricks that are cheap+good and since you would like some gambling routines, you can check the one-on-one's moves from Jason England

I would also suggest since you like gambling routines, to look into a invisible palm. If you already haven't. If I'm not mistaken there's on in Paul Harris Art of Astonishment book.

i will buy TOOC.

it looks very informative and fun.

looks a bit thin for 50 bucks, but the material sounds good.
A bit disappointed with all the coin across routines.

sounds very good though.

Aquaman - I shall lead you to your epiphany in the shape of Bill Malone.

Buy one of his great dvd's On The Loose 1, 2, 3 or 4. You will not be dissapointed. This is all magic you can perform, from every range of difficulty - and no matter what you will get laughs out of them. They're casual, funny, gamblin-esque, and totally unexpected.

Try it ;) - Trailers are on youtube.

Hey Aquaman, dont worry bout not catching up to the newest thing, sometimes the newest things arent always as good as the old ones. I for one started doing card magic because i had the spare time, but it became more than a hobby so i carried on.

Im a visual learner so most of my material is DVD, and i reallly started advancing my skills when DM's stuff came out - maybe you ought to check out his stuff too, whether DVD or books. Theres a lot of great info around the site and forums which will answer your needs, jus stick around and you'll find something you like.

As for getting back up to perform, constantly performing for other people is the remedy to killing nerves and advancing, because if you retreat, you age. Thats what all people say, but its true - patter developes over time as you perform more. Get to knowyour effects that you do, then try and find out how you can play around with it - many topics discuss this on T11 even on Ellusionist and Penguin. So go check them out. Will help a load.

As for that, go out and swing it.

To advance in magic you will have to study a lot of people, why they do certain effects, why they express effects to be so, after all that searching, after all that realising, it leads back to yourself.

So it wouldnt hurt now would it?

As for tricks, Praetoritevong has replied to many of this sort of question/issue with a good reply, but i dont now where i can find it now, its a good one.

Tricks are mere tricks, "but put presentation behind it, it becomes a bottlefied miracle.".

I suggest watching people perform to stimulate yourself. Watch as much people perform as you can.
