Card Manipulation 101 : Volume Two by Dan Sperry

hahaha its a joke dude relaaax there are a lot of asian manipulators who have very creative stuff but do flail about quite a bit in their productions - granted they are very skillful I am in no way putting down their abilities but when put up againist guys like McBride or Hart they move like an epeleptic in an earthquake - just what I've seen and merely my opinion and not directed at anybody directly. Its no different than if i were to say something like hair blowing like a european illusionist with 80s copperfield music, just a joke and c'mon we're magicians we can't take ourselves seriously...

Offtopic, but romeo, for the love of god, change your text to normal so my eyes don't implode.

...I just tried using the standard font to make others happy, but it kind of felt dirty doing so. I should apologize for the inevitable imploding eyeballs in the near future-- but please ensure the webcam is turned on as it happens. I'd love to see it. And if you're really having trouble reading what I've to say-- let me save you the stress. STOP READING, nothing of what I say's truly all that important anyway.

hahahaha ok good just making sure i was like awwwww sh!t now everybody hates me...even more....yeah its hard to tell on these chat/forum things that's why I never liked them soo many ways to get misunderstood haha...

dude yeah shimada is siiiick that guy like invented everything practically haha - ok yes that's an exaduration so relax whoever took that seriously - but there's a youtube clip of that guy performing in Greece and he is still dead on it is amazing. I saw him once live doing these rapid fire single producitons in each hand then in the middle of it BAM BAM two appearing canes one in each hand, he paused and looked at them like wtf then tossed them over his shoulder and went on producing singles haha it was one of the sickest "**** you's" i've ever seen next to brett daniel's zombie switch and probably joseph gabriel's double macaw steal haha

my 2 cents

Dan is teaching the foundation. 1+1= type stuff. The things that are needed to progress. I enjoy his teaching methods. I don't think his handles look jenky at all.

Showmanship should be your own. How you'd like to display or not display is up to you. After watching videos on youtube...the same basic things are happening (just like what Dan is teaching, imagine that!?!) But, how they move thier hands, how they make them appear is what makes them unique.

Typing in "card manipulation" at youtube gets you this awesome asian chick doing some of the same things in these 1 on 1's. Then there is that Buka guy. Despite the language barrier. He is simply amazing and funny how he is manipulating the cards. Pulling cards out of his mouth and ears....wow. But, watching what they both do boils down to knowing the basics. They are using the same moves.

I do have a question though. I have the exact same problem as you. (Mr. Sperry) I have long fingers with windows you can just about stick a finger through ( no joke :( ) Are there any finger exercises to close up those windows? Some fatty foods I should look into?

*completely off topic* watching your teach a trick #4. Where Spike is stealing your thunder. How hard are birds to train? How do you even begin to get them trained?

That Macaw steal is insane... he's producing silks and its like "big whoop" then bam, a big ass bird.. but wait.. TWO big ass birds...

Was that your inspiration for Spike's appearance in the act?

Maybe I'm being over-analytical, but I personally think Dan's technique seems a little... messy. I contemplated keeping this to myself, but I'm not sure if he was the most qualified choice to teach card manipulations. I've seen much better. I know they're of completely different styles and backgrounds, but Lance Burton and Jeff McBride's sleight-of-hand do look more elegant and magical. I admit and apologize, I'm looking at this directly through the eyes of a magician-- but I don't think Dan makes card manipulation look artistic at all. He makes it look like meager backpalming and finger-flicking.

Although I don't personally own them, I know that Jeff McBride has a set on similar card manipulation. It's hailed as a definitive course on the subject, and if you've seen him perform manipulations live, I'm sure you can spot a major difference in quality. Many performers ranging from Michael Ammar to Eugene Burger recommend the set, so I think it's a safe supplement to what T-11 is offering in case you want some additional resources.

I can personally recommend the old card manipulation books written by Jean Hugard. They're admittedly very dry and probably won't suit those who learn better from DVDs, but for those of you with patience and determination, I'm sure you'll pick up some intangible qualities not offered in video instruction.

Granted, this opinion is solely based off what was seen on the demo. That may be unfair. I can't speak for Dan's teaching abilities, but I do express a quiet concern in the possibility of teaching sloppy technique. If it's not the case, it's not the case-- and I apologize sincerely ahead of time. I've offered some quality feedback and additional resources for anyone interested anyway.

Haha right...next week Lance Burton 1 on 1. I'm sure he would love to come teach us.

Finger Fattening...

I know I've seen a guitar finger strenthening type excersice tool that musicians use that is spring loaded...you could try that to help build up some muscle. Usually what I used to do was once i knew I was getting low on cards for singles I would jump into split fans haha that's the solution that best worked for me...I feel your pain haha...just perhaps try that or wrap your fingers in Bandaids as the last resort maybe? I've never tried that method but have always contemplated it haha - let me know if you find anything that works!

The parrot production I do just came to me one day - for me at least - most of my inspirations come when I'm not looking for them...its like LOVE haha you find it when you least expect it. Of course it was an evolution and something I had in my head for a long time and then just one day I went and made the prototype, it worked, and its stayed in the act since haha...

Parrot training is hard work, I was blessed with Spike as being a companion first and foremost and then tried him in the act and if it worked great and if not no big deal...I didn't want to be a bird act that relied on a parrot for an ending, it is hard enough traveling with doves let alone to have to worry about a big exotic. I actually raised him like a dog, I don't think he knows he's a parrot. He sleeps in bed with me and my girl just like a dog, when we're on the road he sleeps with us in the hotel room, he sits on Temika's lap when I'm driving and sticks his head up to the window just like a dog, and when he eats he has doggy dishes on teh floor for his food and water haha its really amazing...

I got lucky and am totally blessed to have this rarity...I have several friends who have exotics and they scream, bite, etc, and some you just can never train. It is an enormous investiment of time, LOTS of money, and mentally and emotionally draining at times...but he's our litty guy and our son (since it is basically like having a 3 year old) so we gota love him haha...

Card Manip vol 3?

Gaw...what a bummer on a Friday night. :( Here I was hoping for vol 3 of the card manipulation. Ah well. Any idea when we should be expecting it?

Wow. I can drop a quarter between my first and middle finger window. I can poke a small portion of my finger through that window also... crap ...

I tried putting on band aid under my right eye....looked to much like Nelly so I don't thing thats going to help with my manipulation. :(

I'm looking into squeezy toys though. One of my weight lifting friends says thats all you need to have ripped...er...healthy looking fingers. :)

Also, putting 10-15 cards in backpalm and just leaving them there helps allot to train the fingers and is also a good warm up.

Windows are not as huge of a deal from stage, ,i'd imagine. With movement and the flesh colored cards you should be fine.
