Because everyone is familiar with cards.
Because they are easy to put in your pocket as are, coins, rubber bands and other small objects.
Because they require a great deal of skill and practice compared to a lot of self working gimmicks (not that gimmicks don't require some practicing).
Because you can be at someone's house and 9 times out of 10 they have a deck of cards and you can immediately perform some of your magic for them.
Because there are so many miracles that can be produced with these pieces of pasteboard.
