There is a close-up magic competition coming up in a few months. I'm kinda interested but I don't know the first thing about close-up magic competitions. I've never participated in a magic competition before. Help please.

alright, here is my advice. First, you need to sit down and think about what you want your act to be about. You cant simply have a collection of tricks, it needs a theme, cohesion, etc. So once you have an idea, play around with it, start scripting and routining an act around that theme with tricks that work well with that. Keep tweaking it, re-order the stuff, play with different presentations and patter. Next, PRACTICE. after you have something your happy with practice it till you know it COLD, can do it without even thinking. Then perform it, go out and try it out on people and see what works and what doesn't. what do you like and what do you want to change. Then repeat the beginning, re-order, re-work and re-try. Then practice and perform again.

your on the right track already thinking about it months in advance. that gives you the chance to do this right. hopefully this helps.

Follow jrobarts advice. Yes there are rules and regulations at these. Most of the time there is a 10 or 12 minute time limitation and if you run over it....you are out, done, disqualified.

I would dress up sharp and look professional. Some of these guys look like they just decided the day of the competition, stand up there in jeans, t-shirt and go through a collection of effects. This is not going to win you anything.

I would definitely have an underlying theme and probably background music and use a volunteer. I have seen people win these things with just one or two effects that they play up huge.

agreed. quality over quantity. Also, looking nice is great, but sometimes a theme outfit works too. i have seen performers dressed in work clothes cause they did magic with tools, and a hobo magician that had me in stitches. Just make sure you think through everything and practice bunches.
