Coins for general coin magic

What type of coin is typically used in most coin magic handlings/routines?

I just recently bought Eric Jones' Metal, and it appears as if he's using coins that are larger
than half-dollars. Are half-dollars sufficient though?

Eric Jones used dollar coins like Silver Morgans in the Metal series to emphasize some of the sleights, but he normally goes with half-dollars like Walking Liberties.

The coin you use should be based on the size of your hand. Here is a quick chart that most magicians go by:
Small- Quarter
Medium- Half-Dollar
Large- Dollar coins like Silver Morgans

Though that is just a guideline and sometimes the routine you are doing will help dictate which coin you want to use. For example, you probably don't want to do Miser's Dream with Walking Liberties, but you could put it off.

I hope that answers your question.

Thanks for the advice.
Just got started with coins since I got the DVD, and I'm for now just learning the basics of the 4 Coins Across
routine that he teaches. Would four half-dollar pieces work fine with that routine?

Absolutely. And if you are looking for a little bit more with your half dollars and don't mind spending a little bit extra, try getting some more circulated (or soft) coins from your local coin shop. I dropped about 10 bucks on each walking liberty and I can honestly say that I haven't regretted it yet. But you don't have to, and newer JFK's work just fine.

I think I'll just stick with my Walking Libertys as they are now before I start doing anything crazy, lol.
Just getting a feel for coins at the moment.

ya I actually just watched metal last night to freshen up on coin stuff and I only use the half dollars typically and they work like a charm. But as mentioned above it really depends on your hand size. I have trouble palming certain small coins because of my hand size, thus I typically use half dollar or bigger.

Glad you are joining in on coin magic! Yeah, I would play around and get a feel for both sizes. I went to my bank one day and got soe half dollars and silver dollars. I didn't have to spend much. I started playing around with them. To me, is seems that the dollar sized coins look better with my hands, although I do use half dollars for certain routines (like Spellbound, as the English Penny is the same size). Good luck with your coin magic. I have found it is much more difficult to make coin magic look good. I have been practicing Eric's 4 Coins Across routine for a year and have only been recently performing it. Great DVD though!

I'll have to play around with both sizes. Coin magic is super fun though..I feel that coins aren't as finicky as cards (I like both though).

How's your 4 Coins routine looking?
