I have liked magic since I was a kid but unfortunately didn't start practicing magic til after high school. But, I would of liked performing at school cuz in my opinion its good way to practice performing and the word spreads fast in high school so if u are ready and confident enough to perform, I would say go for it! Like I said the words spreads fast so its a good way to build up your reputation early
Since word spreads fast, and you want to build a solid reputation, DONT SCREW UP. If it's the first time you perform for kids in school and you mess up, your reputation is automatically ruined. Hit em hard with a self working trick or just a card change in the spectator's hands (simple double lift).
I wouldn't perform too often at school. You will begin to ruin the experience for all of those around you. Keep it to a trick every now is the best way to do things. It keeps the moment special and has a higher chance of letting your audience get emotionally attached. Though, they do provide a great a practice ground every once in a while.
Disagreed, I perform everyday in my senior year, back in the day. Everyone loved it. I choose audience well; I don't just gamble going to a random person and start performing. Study the audience well before approach.
I actually don't agree with Casey. If you mess up it's not really that big of a deal. Sure high school students are a lot tougher than other audiences but if you mess up there not going to say screw you and walk off. I have in my high school what we call the forum where most people hang out. I have performed there where I had about a crowd of almost 40 people and I messed up several times during this performance and no one looked twice at it. A few teachers came to watch too, did a few effects for some. One teacher got mad at us because one of my buddies put down his hat so I could collect money haha, made a few bucks, they thought we were gambling. But I think performing during school is great, as long as it doesn't interfere with learning. I actually am going to be performing at a school presentation for about 200 people in the new year for my teachers, they love it.
I'm currently in my 4th year of college, and I've been 'seriously' doing magic for a little over a year. When I say 'seriously', I mean actually practicing and studying studiously. I've messed around with simple sleights and simple tricks for a looooong time, until I decided I want to take my magic to the highest level.
So, that being said, I don't perform for ANYONE at school. Not during lunch, class, walking around campus, anything. There are two reasons I don't, number one being I'm ridiculously busy. Number two, I like to surprise people (friends/acquaintances) with my talent (not only magic, but guitar, drums, keyboard, and other random useless talents). We will be hanging out at my apartment and I'll just pick up a deck of cards we've been fooling with earlier and blow their minds. I also do a little bit at random parties around campus.
That's just the way I like to do it though![]()
