Double lift issues...

Hey fellow card enthusiasts.
I have a couple questions about doing double lifts:

1. What's the best way to turn over a double? I usually use my index and thumb to turn it over and place it halfway on the deck (toward me), but sometimes the end i'm not holding will split and expose the two cards.

2. How do you do a breakless double? I hold a break with my left pinky on the side of the deck rather than holding it under the two top cards, but I would like to learn a breakless double so I wouldn't need to take the time to riffle off the two top cards.

If you can help me on this I'd appreciate it.

To answer both of your questions, I have finally trained myself to do Lee Asher's Diving Board Double without a break! :D

Ok, breakless DL. Start in Mechanic's grip of course. Using your left (this is assuming your right handed) index finger, bevel the cards toward yourself. Come down above the deck with your right hand. With your right index finger, hold down the front of the cards. Bend your right middle finger and place it on the middle, applying pressure. Then on the back of the deck, use your right thumb to pick up the back of one card, then catch a second. Then pick up the two cards as one between your right index finger and thumb, and use your right middle finger to turn the two cards over, set them on top of the deck at a slight injog, this will allow you to turn them back over smoothly.

For different double lifts, I just the "Domico Double Lift" out of Card Control by Arthur H. Buckley. It's pretty fun to do and looks cool.

haha funny this comes up. We just talked about this at my IBM ring meeting about half an hour ago. Honestly there isnt necessarily a "best" way to do it. As long as its fairly natural, laymen (spectators) are not looking for it. Just make sure its consistant! Consistancy is key. Also a good tip I picked up at Sorcerers Safari last week...dont try to make your double lifts look like single lifts, try to make your single lifts look like double lifts. i hope you understand what I'm saying because that tip helped me alot. i really hope i helped =)

best to use a pinky count more than a break...

The reason for that is it is a concealed move and when using a pinky count you can move your pinky out and the cards are flush.:D and with practice you can place up to 4 cards on the table with the illusion as one.

I really like that advice of making your singles look like doubles... who suggested that?

Very nice.

For a breakless double that is secure in it's double condition, look into the strike double lift. John Armstrong (pimp!) has a very nice treatise on the DL in the latest 'Reel magic Plus' DVD magazine.

Although, you can make many doubles breakless just by practicing them an awful, awful lot. In fact I just did an experiment then - trying to see how successfully I can pick up two cards as one just without a break. I know no-one likes to hear "keep practicing" - but in this case, it's not so much that you need to practice more... But if you do practice beyond what's necessary, you can get there that way.

It's not flashy, the card just turns over on the top of the deck. Most people will need to start with a break, though, so that may be a downfall for you. I still love it, though.

There is a great breakless double lift in the Card Magic of LePaul that uses no break, but you dont have to have a great feel for the cards to do it. it is not a strike DL.

Another method to produce a break suttley

To get a break without thumbing off and counting, or other obvious moves, I method I like to use is to cascade the cards down into my hand (I often do this regardless, so it looks completely natural), and then when squaring them up I can catch however many cards I want with my thumb and then transfer the break to my pinky.
