First Mini Performance

Hi everyone, today I took a step further into being a magician. Every 2nd Sunday of the month, I follow my parents to a place of worship. After 3 months into card magic, I decided to bring a pack of cards there to perform. There were some kids playing outside but I was afraid of being rejected, so I just played with my cards in a room. (I just can’t get over my fear) Then, one of the kids walked up to me and offered to play a game of blackjack. I took out my deck and performed the “2 Card Monte” for them. Although he flipped the card face up after the 1st switch, the whole group of them was amazed.

They said, “Oh, he is a magician. Can you show us one more?”

I continued on and performed “The Shamus Card”. I screwed up on this one. Somehow I can’t perform this trick right in front of spectators. I can do it perfectly while I’m practicing at home. Luckily, they didn’t jeer nor feel disappointed.

I sat down and talked to them about some stuff, while I was setting up my deck for the next trick. After the deck was set, I continued and performed “The Fabulous Four 3’s”. This caught their attention and they asked for more.

Lastly, I performed “Card in Hand”. Some of them asked, “How do you do that?”, “Can you teach me how?” As I was not prepared to perform so many tricks, I closed up by saying that I had to go to a friend’s house (which was true).

While I was on the train to my friend’s house, I reviewed my performance. I felt happy and disappointed with myself at the same time. I felt happy because I finally got a chance to perform to strangers. But disappointed because I screwed up “The Shamus Card”, and the “2 Card Monte” was partially screwed up. I was so nervous that my hands were shaking the whole time. I couldn’t prevent my hands from shaking although I knew there were shaking as though the world was coming to an end.

My lessons learnt from this experience, practice more, stay calm and be prepared.

When your preforming just dont think about what your doing. Just concentrate on the people and what they are doing. If you know the trick like the back of your hand then there is no way you can screw it up. And do not build up confidence just go and do it and the confidence will build up by itselfe.

I screwed the trick up because I was nervous. I realised I done it right when I was on the train. How do I prevent my hands from shaking?

Dude that's awesome. Nice job just doing it and it's first time, it's kool. I know you'll improve. When i go out to perform, my first encounter with a spec., I feel so scared and nervous. When your mind tell you to not go and you're scared, say to yourself, "STOP! I'm going for it!"

The best thread I've ever seen on Theory11 (not very hard to accomplish though). I am honestly thinking: "Good f**king job mate- I love you". Seriously, this really is the first time I'm proud of another magician.

Why do I feel so happy for you?
1) You actually performed for people
2) It's even better they were strangers
3) You performed more than ONE trick
4) You performed some stuff I haven't heard of before
5) YOU REVIEWED YOUR PERFORMANCE- The main reason why I'm proud of you.

My only advice to you- do the exact same thing, as many times as you can, starting now. Don't stop until your magic interest dies (which may the time you actually die- *knock wood*).
Hope I get to see something very similar next month!

Quoted because he took the words right out of my mouth.

As for your shaky hands; it's normal to be nervous. Just get out there, relate to people, and it will pass while your confidence grows. As for messing up, well... that happens to everyone :)

Again, GREAT job!
