"Did you see that guy on FISM do that awesome ACR routine where the cards jumped into the card case?"

"OMG Yeah I did! That routine was flawless and perfect, I'd like to be more like him."

Now I am not bashing FISM or anything, but I am bashing people who believe that the performers who've won FISM should be the ones emulated. I disagree to an extent.

What is Fism? Well it is simply a pagan gathering of wizards every four years. At this gathering different wizards summon up form the depths of another world, great supernatural powers from beyond to show their strengths and knowledge in magic. You know I once went and watched a wizard summon this massive, draconic monster from another dimension and it brought tears to my eyes. Not because it was impressive, which it was, but because the three day ritual before the magic was BORING, and I had to pee…

Now back to reality, if you think about it. Most FISM acts are structured in this way. The magician walks onstage or what have you and does a bunch of things that make no sense to a lay person then ends with some sort of big bang or climax. Now that is all well and good but FISM acts are built for magicians not laypersons. The act that won FISM may be entertaining and fooling to other wizards, but may come across as bland and illogical to lay-audiences.

So if there is a bunch of FISM wanna be magicians running around performing, where did the entertainment go?

MY POINT of all this is, you as a regular perform should not try to be a FISM competitor but try to be a more entertaining person with your audience. Being entertaining doesn't mean you have a rigid script structure or a knuckle busting routine that will fool magicians. It means that you are a person and openly invite your participants to enjoy who you are and enjoy the strange, not so scary, wizard powers that you have.
