Gimmick Magic

Hello my dear friends,

I just boughtsome gimmicks like Ignition, LinKey and Unleashed. Out of all of these I will probably only use Iginition and MAYBE Unleashed. The problem I have is that I want a self contained gimmick that I can always carry with me that DOESN'T use anything to add (like Linkey (one possibility) and Unleashed (although its not that hard I feel like Iginition is the most practical of them all).
Here is my question: What do you think is another great gimmick like Ignition that:
1. Is self-contained
2. Organic
3. Nothing to steal or to add
4. The gimmicks I don't like that much but know about is TUCCU and this clear "box" that you wear on youre key chain.
5. Doesn't matter which effect it achieves.
Two final questions and notes:
Is there a ring flight to my key chain, not a wallet where the keys are in it (we don't have that in Germany :) )?
And although it might be ironical that Iginiotn uses 2 bl***s I think the fact that the 2*d bl*** is stuck to the gimmick makes it easier to carry.
Cheers
Philipp

Hello my dear friends,
5. Doesn't matter which effect it achieves.

This seems like a very strange way to go about buying/learning a new effect. Shouldn't the end result be the most important part?

The most brilliant gimmick is useless if it doesn't fit your style. I would say a PK Ring is a great gimmick, and probably fits most of those requirements, but would be a terrible investment if you didn't want to wear a ring or do the type of effects it makes possible.

You should be thinking about what you want to achieve and then deciding if you need a gimmick to get the end result.

Colin is correct, the random buying of "things" means you end up with a stock pile of stuff you never use. While you may gain a bit in the education department, you loose when it comes to cash, storage, and practicality.

Your best "gimmick" is your knowledge base followed by a skill set. FOCUS! Master your slight of hand skills so you don't need to rely on gaffs THAT is what will make you a magician. . . any moron can buy a gimmick and present a "trick" but it takes a dedicated student to invest time and patience in his/her self and make something from nothing.

I could give you a very lengthy list of devices that fit your criteria but most would be impractical to you and what I'd assume to be your general performing environment. Secondly, we don't know whether you want to do Mentalism, Traditional Magic, Bizarre. . . . there are too many variables.

When it comes to stealing out and ditching props. . . GET OVER IT! This is the bane of our existence. Sometimes that is what is required in order to create the miraculous, but again, this is one of the reasons you need to learn your slights as well as the psychology behind misdirection.

"Magic" isn't about tricks, it's about performance. Learn to craft actual routines that go beyond gimmicks. Learn to be smooth with them and clean but most importantly, learn how to be a showman. It's amazing what you can get away with when you are a true showman.

Best of luck

The reason I posted this is that although I like, I don't like it to carry an extra piece around with me. As you stated in another thread one should only peform the magic that suits him and his style. So by that I think that Unleashed is a great illusion but I don't like it to carry this 2*n d****g around with me all the time. I want to have the gimmick (which is selfcontained) and that's it. So you asked me for what kind of effect I am looking for. Atm moment I am looking for a Ring Flight device that I can attach to ANY key chain (The Professional version offers a whole set of keys and I don't want to carry a second key chain with seperate key either.) It should have a good quality and kinda cheap. Not cheap made but the limit would be like 60$.
What do you think about this device?

From what I see, it looks like slight of hand.

There is a Ring Flight that is just a key fob if I recall correctly that delivers something far closer to the original Ring Flight effect. . . the key's aren't introduced until the end of the routine so the surprise takes place vs. the basic reveal you see in this demonstration.

Do bear in mind, you can do a Ring Flight type of routine using a Thumb Tip and have the ring appear more or less anywhere you want.

The keys are not the important part so if the professional version you were looking at comes with key just take them off and replace them with the keys you normally carry, there is no need to carry a second set. In fact if you use the keychain for your everyday keys it is going to make everything more natural as you are grabbing something you use often.

The video you link to shows a keyring with a house key and a old skeleton on it which, to me, looks stranger than the 'wallet' style key chain that I bought about two decades ago that still works great. You can still buy that style of keychain in stores here and I have never been questioned about it. If it is something I am using with any regularity I just it to carry all my everyday keys so there isn't really anything extra to carry in my pocket.

It sounds like it would be better to invest in a great book or two and focus on sleight of hand routines where you do not need any gimmicks.

I can see the value in a self contained gimmick. It means you only have to pull out that prop and nothing else. Of course there is the invisible deck as well as Smoke. I think most Paul Harris products shoot for this self contained idea.

Atm I don't think I need a book on sleight of hand as I am learning ring magic and sponge balls and 2 knacky coin moves so I hve enough to do for a lot of time.

Are you planning on closing you ring routine with Ring Flite? I guess if you never see the wallet style key chains it may not make sense but if you are doing coins and sponge ball work I would still consider it. You could easily carry a couple of coins in it which would help even more with pocket management and could also produce sponge balls out of it so it could be tied to all parts of the act.

And don't get me wrong I am not saying there is anything wrong at all with gimmicks, they make all kinds of impossible things possible, they way I read the original post it sounded a bit like you were more interested in the gimmick than the effect.

Have you looked at any of the other ring to impossible location effects? I remember something coming out a couple of years ago with a ring to nut. If you can't find a keychain/fob that makes sense to you it may be worth looking into. Or like Craig suggested use a TT and load it into a bread roll or something.
