I gave you what?!

True Story:

A cute girl that I know has been to a couple of my shows once came up to me after one of my shows and informed me that my act had given her nightmares. At first the only thing I could think of was: "Hey, at least a cute girl is dreaming about me!" but the more I think about it the more I realize what kind of power my presentation has over people to be able to invade their subconscious mind to the point of tainting their dreams.

So my question to you is, what are you doing to ensure your act is memorable in the eyes of your audience?

I thought you were gonna say herpes.

But yeah, I love that realisation of knowing people have been thinking about your magic. Someone I performed for a few years ago came up to me a few weeks ago and told me they still have no idea how I pulled their card through a window.

What I do to ensure that my audience remembers my presentation is truly involving them in the experience.. I let them come up to the stage and see my props and I really customize each performance to the occasion... I perform for more high-end clientele and what really makes them entertained is a performance that breaks their preconceived notions and brings them into a world where the lines of illusion and reality are blurred... What I love most about my style is that I am very approachable and very versatile.. I am proud to say that not being a "one trick pony" has really enabled me to constantly evolve..

Very good reaction though Draven!! Get her number by any chance, haha?

Just my 2 cents..

I don't really know what I do, I just try to sell my tricks. The best thing that ever happened to me in magic while performing for my friends was when ALL I DID was do a double lift and say something like "Look the 8 of clubs" then I pulled off the top card, shook it, and turned it over and said "Look it changed" and my friend grabbed my cards and started shaking them to see if they change! It was hilarious.

lol. I have a few stories, some less appropriate for this site than others.

but my audiences are mostly small groups of females. I find mentalism hits really hard with women. Once in Cuba, I met a spring breaker who was taking "forensic psychology", which is essentially criminal profiling. I thought to myself, that this might be a good segue into a mentalism demo, but then thought she must FOR SURE know about cold reading, i mean, that should be the first thing they warn/talk about, but eventually I figured, "meh, why not give it a shot" - yeah, all of that in a 3 second span.

So I was like "forensic psych, huh? So that's like criminal profiling?....cool....i can do this really neat exercise to profile people, want to try it?" Her eyes LIT UP! So I go through a short cold reading exercise and she's floored. She freaked out and said "I can't believe I'm going to school to learn that and you're just a graphic designer and you can do it!". She insisted that I teach her how it's done and pestered me all night, though I didn't have the heart to tell her everything I did was complete BS - I didn't want to dishearten her and crush her passion for forensic psych as she seemed like she couldn't tell the two apart.

Other times, I'll do a card trick and wander about after a bit of conversation. If I see the person again, I'll call them by their card and they'll usually respond/remember. "Hey! 6 of Hearts! Come here!" If I get her number, same deal. I'll call and use that as a greeting. Crude, but it's a great in because the second you say it, it almost re-triggers that moment when you did whatever you did. This even works weeks or even months later depending on how much rapport you build before and after the illusion. Infact, I'm sure that a certain "6 of Hearts" bartender in Montreal still has her signed card in her bedroom mirror....

The most intense memory that was relayed to me was one of my best friends girlfriend.
It was a message on myspace. Its a bit private but ill share the message and not the name.

"its not bad. but i probably shouldnt be thinking it.
well here it goes...

there's something mysterious about you. i like it.
you have these eyes with no end, and when i look into
them i get an overwhelming feeling of intoxication.
and it keeps me wanting more.
you have a sly smile, like you're up to no good,
and i want so bad to be a part of it.
when you speak you say few words but when you
do they keep me wanting more...

wow, i cant believe i just told you that."

Yeah, you're a bad man lol... But I really hope that you respond to her in a way that it is better she left those memories forever... I mean, she is your best friends girlfriend. You can't change what she feels or think, but you can change the way that is going to be... (I know this has nothing to do with the topic, or magic, but I just had to say and make sure that your heart is in a good place).

i honestly the best thing to do is to pretend like you never got that message. to him and to her. nothing good will come of it otherwise.

I used to work at an Italian restaurant. My boss's sister was a waitress and was just unpleasant to every staff member. Nobody liked her and tried to stay out of her way. One night, when it was dead slow (two tables) i went and did a little magic for a party of three. when i went back to the bar afterwards she asked me what i was doing talking to her table. I showed her a few tricks and by the end she was jumping up and down laughing. People who had been there way longer than me had never seen her like this. The kitchen manager said I tamed the beast.

A little over a month later it was another slow night and I was watching tv at the bar. I walked to the end of the bar to get a water. I walked past my boss's sister and she was reading a twilight book. I saw her book mark out of the corner of my eye. It was the card she had signed for the routine I performed for her. I was reminded how much I love magic right then and there.

I just thought this was an appropriet place to share this story.

the reason why i do the most least tricks than most magicians is because i totally switch it up, IF i buy an effect. But for the most part i try and add something to an effect always, even if they've seen it done before, i make sure they've never saw i done like i present it. Everytime i get an effect, i see how the performer do it, then i make it match my style, if it does, fine, if not, i try to mix it with something else....

Too late for that.It was over a month ago. I did message her back
But I thanked her for the kind words but that I wouldnt have the heart to do anything to (insert friends name here) and she of course completely understood.Said it was just something to get out of her chest. She still carries around some of the souvenirs ive given her though..but I hope for the best.

I was really hoping you were gonna say AIDS.

I abuse them physically, leaving a mark from my show....literally.

Imagine that story:

"WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO YOUR ARM?"

"So this magician was doing a card trick, he put the card in the middle, then he started punching my over and over and over again!!!"

"wow....so what happened to the card once it was in the middle?"
