actually in my opinion, and this is just me so its different for everybody, but it makes total sense to do it the way i did it becasue the first thing you thought of was for me to swallow it...sometimes it doesn't always make sense to go with your first kneejerk idea for a routine because it is the most obvious solution, ie chewing up the candy. Like i've said many times before i strive for the artistic side, not the common run of the mill obvious solution magic side.
in all honesty, only magicians have mentioned doing it that way, and be it only a small select few -never a laymen...magic is an art, and like all art it is open to interpretation, everybody takes away something different from the experience of lifesaver just like people have their own reasons for why mona lisa is smiling.
i like to use this example to better illustrate...lets say you go into the magic shop and buy the mis made flag routine. what other receptical prop would you think of buying in aiding the "switching" of the silks for the routine?

Chewing the candy isn't part of the effect and it would look silly for him to chew it, then swallow it and then have it come back in one peace. They would be like "Did he just barf that up and cause it to get put back together?" For a lay person is makes for sense for the candy not to be swallowed. Because you pull it out of your throat.
I freakin love it. I love the candy stuck in the teeth motivating the need for floss. I love the total switch around of flossing the throat. I love the restoration of the mint. It all makes total-weird sense. Creative and awesome.

I know that the final edit doesn't have the performers' regular sound track. (Part of the charm of "Coin Operated Boy" is, well, matching it with "Coin Operated Boy".) Are they writing music for the show or are they trying to find cheap royalty free music and match it to the acts? (I'm afraid I know the answer.)

Were the broadcast rights too expensive for the producers? I noticed that Jeff McBride didn't even have his original music for his mask routine in the first episode, and a couple background tracks were used twice.

This is a routine I do as well. I always loved SAW and the LifeSaver version but the way Fields suggests to do it never quite worked for me. I saw Dan use a mint (instead of those sticky-as-hell candies Sean recommends) and thought it was brilliant. Dan, hope you don't mind I use that idea, haha (I perform it completely differently, just use the idea of the lifesaver and dental floss)
However, when I perform it I usually try to appear to swallow the mint whole. As said, its just artistic difference. For me it seems more like a physical stunt when I swallow a whole lifesaver and pull it through the throat whole. For me, chewing it up makes it seem more like a trick. Again, its just artistic opinion.
At the same time, however, when Dan does it I think it is just brilliant and the chewing is justified. Why? I have no earthly idea. Its just the difference between artists, for him it just works.
And by the way, as much as I love doing this routine it is even more fun to WATCH. When I saw this live I was sitting in a group of laymen. When Dan sawed into his neck everyone looked like they had just seen a car wreck. I sat and laughed hysterically.
I know this post is turning into an epitaph, but I just have to share something.
I did my lifesaver routine last weekend at a gig. The performance was a total cluster eff to begin with. We got called on stage 30-45 minutes EARLY with about 2 minutes to setup. I went on stage and had no microphone, no music, nothing(the people behind the gig didn't speak english very well and didn't understand the phrase "I need a microphone").
I starting doing the routine and everything was great until the end. Apparently I "sawed" to deeply into my neck and when I went to pull out the floss got stuck, the lifesaver flew OFF OF THE FLOSS and then I ripped the last of the floss through my neck. The crowd was grossed out and ate it up, but it hurt like no tomorrow. However, what really stung was when I tried to sanitize my neck with an alcohol pad. My god.

I have a question, is it illegal to perform a published trick on national television? Cuz i have yet to see anything that has been published. I'm just curious.
Oh, and last night's show was the best in my opinion. Especially that guy who did that one trick (i forgot his name) where the four aces turn into the four kings.

Actually, most of the effects that have been on Masters Of Illusion have been previously published. It is not illegal to perform tricks because they published, but because their creators own the television performing rights. You have to either own the rights or have permission from the right holders to perform those effects on television.

Thanks for the input guys...couple quick answers before I head out the door...
1 - music: i believe they have somebody composing music or have some stock that they've already had composed from past projects...some of it sounds familiar from years ago
2 - magic on tv: even if it is published I always ask to make sure its ok, sean is a buddy of mine and also granted me the OK to do my version of his SICK routine, which i'm not sure will air because the network is kidn of iffy about that stuff, they didn't want me doing razor blades so we'll be lucky if sick airs...
3 - alcohol: i never use alcohol to sanitize my neck when I do it. Go to a theatrical make up supply store and get some adhesive remover and use that instead. There was a period of time where I was doing this 4 times a day here in vegas in 2 different shows - viva las vegas in the afternoon adn when i was also opening for AJ at night so my neck got tooore uuup. I use the adhesive remove from the theater store, then apply a small amount of neosporin - once that is dry i apply a layer of liquid bandaid. This helps create a barrior when I need to do it over and over again. Trust me, if you're going to be doing this trick a lot you want the liquid bandaid and neo sporin. This will really help save your neck. I'm sad to say I'm actaully permantly marked from this effect from doing it so much. I do it at trade shows all the time too and now have a scar. So my adice woudl be save this for the important gigs haha and in the meantime to THREAD haha

Yeah I seem to recall somebody saying that they did it too often and ended up getting a scar from the effect. I wonder how many times you could do THREAD. I know Wayne said he pretty much opens every show he does with it.
