I can totally relate.

It's like when you're jamming musically, and you try so hard to make your licks and runs work, and they don't. But when you just let it go, it just clicks into place. Most amazing feeling ever.

However,
You need so much background knowledge for your sub conscious to take over though. You need to know sleights inside and out to just improv them in as you need. You need to know history so you can improvise themes and storytelling. You need to know and believe your character's truth so you can be consistent.

Inspiration is a wonderful thing.
I have been 'out of magic' for a while now - not performed or even picked up a deck of cards in ages. I'd just lost the inspiration to perform. I was seriously considering quitting for good. All of a sudden today, I had a stroke of genius, and now I have a brand new trick and a completely different approach to what my magic means to me. As this happened, I realised that it does still mean something to me. I'm so happy right now
