My Trip to California - Prepare for a Long Read

I just got back yesterday from my trip to California, and I had an absolute blast. Just in case you were wondering, I was there visiting my best friend who moved out there in March. So I figured I would tell you guys all about it. FYI- if you don't have much time on the computer, but still want to read this, you might want to print it out- it's going to be pretty long (just my prediction). So, let's get started:

Thursday, May 29, 2008-

The night before I had gathered everything up, printed my boarding passes, and I was ready to go. So I woke up at 4:30 AM, grabbed my bags, fixed a quick breakfast of a nuked egg and some Mountain Dew, and took off. Luckily, I didn't forget anything or something stupid like that.

We made it to the airport with plenty of time to spare, so I checked in one of my bags (the other was carry-on), got a little stamp thing for my boarding pass, and headed to the gate. I got through security fine (whew!), boarded the plane, and we took off.

It was about an hour and fifteen minute flight to Denver, where my connection was. If you haven't been there, Denver International is a freakin awesome airport. It's huge, and has all kinds of shops and things to eat... and moving sidewalks!

After I got on the plane, I made the two and a half hour flight to San Jose, and got off the plane. I checked in with my parents real quick, and called my friend (his name is Matthew) to see where he was at in the airport. Well, for some reason they were running late, which you'll see is a bit of a habit of theirs later in the story, and they were still an hour away from the airport.

So while I waited I grabbed a bagel from a small shop and decide to wait. I was debating whether or not to show some people magic, but I decided against it and just waited until my friend picked up. From there it was about an hour and a half drive to Modesto, California.

After we got there, I said hi to Matthew's family (that wasn't still in school), checked my E-Mail and the forums real quick, and we watched a couple episodes of The Office that he had recorded. After a while we got bored, because we hadn't had anything fun planned that day, so we decided to go play tennis.

His Mom packed us up in the van, took us to Target to get some tennis balls, then we headed over to some courts and played. That was fun, but it was hotter than Hades out there. So we played one game (unfortunately, Matthew won), then headed over to Burger King to grab something to eat.

Obviously, later in the night, we were bored, so Matthew thought it would be fun to go Ding Dong Ditch somebody. I had never thought this was very fun, and thought it was a little immature for our age, but I agreed. Well, little did I know that this little outing was extremely fun and exciting, but I'll probably never do it again.

We went to this house where a guy had just walked through his house and shut the garage door, and my friend rang the door bell. We ran and hid behind a car down the street, waiting for him. After about a minute and a half, he didn't come out, so we started walking down the sidewalk. Well, I turn around, and he's walking out of the house, so we run to the next car we see.

We're sitting there, and I slowly peek my head around the side of the car to see where he's at. He had crossed the street, and was heading down the sidewalk in our direction. Well, my friend poked his whole head around the car, and the guy saw us.

I kept telling Matthew that we had to run, but he kept saying, "No, he didn't see us!" Then as he got closer, Matthew realized it was time to go, and we took off. I about died of a heart attack when I heard him running behind us. So we ran around the corner, and in this neighborhood, they have those "group mailboxes", where each house has its own slot", and these were in front of some bushes, which were in turn in front of a fence.

So I flew around the corner (my adrenaline was pumping pretty darn fast at this point), and dove behind the mailboxes, instantly quieting any noise around me. I was standing up, and was pretty visible, so I thanked the Lord Almighty when the guy continued to run past me. About 30 seconds later, he walked past the mailboxes, huffing and puffing, but without my friend.

So I waited about two minutes to make sure he was gone, then hopped out and sprinted to my friend's house. Luckily, we met there at the same time, and ran into his backyard to this place on the side of his house where it was enclosed by a fence, had a sandbox. Well, I'm sure it was just a cat or something, but something was walking slowly through the back yard, and it sounded like a person going slowly to try to be sneaky, so we hopped the fence and ran inside.

So, as exciting and as much fun as that was, I'll never do it again; I've learned my lesson the hard way. Later that night we stayed up and watched Juno on PPV. I was extremely disappointed with the movie, and although it had funny parts, I didn't think it was nearly as funny on the whole as some people made it out to be. After that we went to sleep, and woke up about 10 the next morning...

Friday, May 30th, 2008-

That morning, we were extremely bored, so Matthew called his future-Step Dad, Larry, to come and get us to take us somewhere cool. We went to Costco with him, and after trying all the awesome free samples there, I bet you can't believe what I got- 24 decks of cards, at an extremely low price of $1.0875 per deck. So that was pretty awesome... too bad I don't have a membership (I used Larry's).

After that, we decided to go give the Mall a whirl and see what it was like. They had some pretty cool stores there, but not very many we don't have here in Missouri (which was kind of surprising to me). After buying some over-expensive candy at a candy shop, and seeing all the stores we wanted to see, we called Matthew's Mom to see if she could come get us. She said in a half an hour, so we waited for 30 minutes, and called her back...

She said that she couldn't come and get us, and I guess just forgot to call us and tell us that, and Larry would be there in an hour after he was done with a patient (he has his own dentist office). So we sat down at a table in the cafeteria, ate some candy, and played cards while we waited.

Finally, Larry came and got us, and we pretty much immediately went to the movie theatre to see Ironman. We were going to go see the strangers, but I guess there's some strange law in California that won't let minors go to an R-rated film without a parent or guardian actually watching it with them. Here in Missouri, you just have to a parent/guardian buy the tickets for you.

Ironman was pretty darn awesome, but the real excitement came afterwards. I've already posted a bulletin on MySpace telling this story, so I'll just copy and paste it:

Part II-

Lady Gets Arrested at Theatre- Awesome Story

So Matthew (my awesome best friend from California) and I were at the theater here in Modesto seeing Ironman (very awesome), and we walked outside, and there was this lady and her friends that were getting kicked out of the theater. Apparently she was laughing too loud, had her cell phone out, and was drinking alcohol inside the theater.

The lady wanted back inside the theater, and she was trying to walk in, and there was this cool Mexican security guard who was blocking the way and he was like, "Please don't try it, ma'am." That was pretty awesome. So then a Sheriff's Deputy shows up and talks to some guy who I think was the manager (he had an awesome suit), and talks to some witnesses, and then finally puts the lady in handcuffs and took her to the cop car.

Then this lady sat down beside Matthew and I that was like a friend of a person who was a friend with the other drunk lady (I think this lady was a little tipsy, too). So she asked if we were waiting for a ride, and we said, "Yeah, we're waiting for my brother, but we were watching that lady get arrested.

And Lady #2 started telling us how good of a person Lady #1 (the drunk lady) is and everything. And we were just laughing and stuff.

After a while, the Deputy came back with Lady #1's friend that had gone with her to the cop car and took Lady #2's statement about what all went down. And Lady #3 (the one that went in with Lady #1) interrupted the Deputy and Lady #2, and the Deputy goes, "You didn't want to talk to me at the car, so you just need to be quiet until I'm done with her.

That was awesome, and Matthew and I started cracking up. Lady #3 goes, "I don't think these guys need to be hearing this, can we do this somewhere else?" And the Deputy just laughed and said no, and kept asking questions.

After that, the Deputy gathered Lady #2 and Lady #3 to meet with the manager of the theater. He said the manager had something to say, and they should listen, because it was really important. The manager said, "Well, the next time you want to go see a movie, go to Brennon." Lady #3 goes, "Amen." Manager- "You're not welcome here anymore." Lady #3- "Good, I don't want to come here anymore." Manager- "Well, you won't be missed.

After that, Lady #1 was released and I guess everybody went home. But we stayed for like another hour and forty-five minutes because Matthew's brother was sitting in the car and wouldn't take us home. :( But that's another story...

So what'd you think? Probably not to exciting for somebody that lives in California, but we never have anything like that happen in my little Podunk town of 10,000. So I thought that was awesome, and deserved a bulletin.

However, after all that, Matthew's brother came to pick us up. You have to understand that Alex hates us, and has to be forced to come pick us up. Don't know why he hates us... I guess he's jealous of our awesomeness. But anyway, we didn't see him pull up, so he comes to get us, and we walk to the car with him cussing at us and all this.

We get to the car, he unlocks his door, being careful to leave the others locked, and drives off, leaving us standing there. So we go back to the front of the Movie Theatre where we had been sitting before, and sat down again. About ten minutes later, Alex pulls back in, we hop in, and he pulls to the back of the movie theatre, pulls into a parking space, stops, and shuts off the car.

Apparently he was trying to teach us a lesson for some reason or another, and we ended up sitting there while he pouted for two hours. Some of the most boring two hours of my life. Before people say we probably deserved it, even Matthew's Mom laughed and called him stupid. We hadn't done anything to him.

After that, we went home, went to bed, and woke up the next morning:

Saturday, May 31st, 2008-

I knew as soon as I woke up that this was going to be an awesome day... I could just sense it. After having my breakfast of a carton of strawberries (I love strawberries, and they're extremely good in California) and some Jones Soda, Larry picked us up, and we were off for San Francisco. The car ride there was a bit long, but I slept most of the way, so it wasn't bad.

We got there, and parked in a parking garage near Pier 39- our destination. We ate the Hard Rock Cafe, which was delicious, then headed out to see the sights. We went to several store, including an awesome memorabilia store, a left-handed store, and Houdini's Magic Shop (an over-priced tourism shop). The only thing about the Magic Shop that I thought was awesome was that they had Tarbell there for like $30 bucks a volume... I was very tempted.

After that we saw a performer perform (Merrie Mary). She was hilarious, and was pretty good at juggling. Then we went and watched the Sea Lions for a while; they were hilarious. After that we drove through San Francisco for a while, saw AT&T Park (where the Giants play), then headed to Martinez, California so we could go to the California Magic Dinner Theatre.

We arrived there about an hour and a half early, so we decided to walk through downtown Martinez for a while until the doors opened at California Magic. I must admit, it was kind of weird there; pretty much all the shops there closed at 6:00 PM, and there was this gang of kids riding skateboards all over the streets.

Finally, the doors, opened, and we walked into the California Magic Dinner Theatre. I thought it was extremely awesome that the guy who was taking tickets said, "Hey, I think we're supposed to be expecting this guy!" as he pointed at me. They gave us one of the best seats in the house, and I was already getting excited.

We got our drinks, and I seriously about peed my pants when Joel walked over and said hi to us. After some brief introductions, he whipped out a Morgan Dollar and started performing. I won't go into detail any of the tricks we saw while we were there, but both the coin effect and the card effect he performed was awesome. After those two effects he said, "Well, I've already spent too much time at my favorite table, so I'm going to move on."

After he left, several other very good close-up magicians circulated around the room as we ate our salad (very delicious). Finally, another big moment I had been waiting for, happened... Gerry Griffin came over to perform for us. He forced a card on my friend, replaced it, and I could tell he was going to try to Classic Force me, so I tried to pick a different card just to see what he would do in that type of situation.

Unfortunately, he's so awesome at the Classic Force that, even though I knew what was happening, and tried to pick the wrong card... he still forced the Five of Spades on me. I signed it, he did a great ACR with it, and after he left, Joel returned and showed us a few more things.

After that, we ate the main course, and prepared ourselves for the stage show. When desert came (they had chocolate covered strawberries which were delicious!), the stage show started. I'm not going to go into detail on the performances, simply because it would take too long, but all three performers (Joel, Gerry, and Timothy James) were absolutely great, and I really enjoyed it.

After the stage show, we hung around, a few magicians showed us some more tricks, and after everybody else cleared out, Joel came and got us, and took us to a table to hang out. I was extremely excited.

I told Joel I thought he should show Matthew and Larry Believe, and to my surprise, he agreed. It was freakin awesome and amazing seeing it in person; Joel, obviously being the creator of it, performs it near perfectly.

Then, making me even more nervous, Joel turns to me and goes, "Your turn." So I pulled out a deck of cards, and performed "Cannibal Kings" from Joshua Jay's "Session"; check out my review for the book if you don't know anything about it. To my surprise and amazement, Joel said he honestly didn't see the ending coming, and he enjoyed it. It was one of my most proud moments as a magician. Not that I fooled him, but that he enjoyed it.

After that we talked a little about how I got started in magic, Randall, flourishing, and just some random subjects. Joel showed us a few more tricks, and they were all awesome. Then he recommended me some books that I would like, so I'm really looking forward to having the money to buy them.

After that, he gave me some fantastic advice on palming, where to start, where to go with it, and everything like that. Thanks a lot Joel! I've really been working hard on the Gambler's Cop and One Handed Top Palm. Thanks again for your awesome advice!

After that, to my disappointment, it was late, and Larry was getting tired, so we left for the long drive home. I slept the whole way. But Joel, thank you and the California Magic team for one of the best nights of my life! I hope I get to meet you again someday!

Sunday, June 1st, 2008-

On this day we went to Yosemite National Park; a place I had always wanted to visit. If I told you in detail everything of this day, you would bored out of your mind, so I'll just give you the gist of it. We made the two and a half hour drive there, got out, hiked around for a few hours, got back in the car, and made the one hour drive to the Giant Sequoias. They were amazing. I took tons of pictures this day, and I'll post them whenever I get a chance. Then we made the two and a half hour drive home. Long day day, but extremely fun.

That night, I packed, and got ready for my flight the next day:

Part III-

Monday, June 2nd, 2008-

I got up this morning, and made sure I had everything packed. We left in plenty of time to get to the airport, but as we soon discovered, we were given bad directions from Larry, and drove 30 minutes past one of our turns. We immediately went back and went the right way.

We were in a race to get to the airport, and we got there with only ten minutes until my flight departed. I ran inside, and the lady told me I wouldn't even get through security. I was pretty bummed out, but fortunately they were pretty helpful and got me on standy for a flight the next morning at 6:30.

That night, Larry came over to Matthew's house to visit. He pulled out a pie from his car, and said it was his apology for making me late. Which was completely unneccesary, but I do love (most) pies. I got inside, opened it up, and about crapped myself. It was a pie crust, with strawberries just piled on top of it with some strawberry syrup looking stuff.

I immediately dove into it, and it was the single most delicious pie I have ever had. I definitely accepted his apology.

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2008-

I woke up at 2:30 yesterday morning, and we started the drive to San Jose' at 3. We got there with plenty of time to spare. I checked in my luggage, and went to security. I went through the metal detector, and the guy on the other side said, "Male Assist on A!" after looking at my boarding pass. He put me in this little plexiglass box in the middle of everybody so I felt like a fish in a fishbowl or something.

I guess because I was on standby, or some other unknown reason, they had to manually search me. It was quite a new experience. One of the guys patted me down while another "team" of two females searched my backpack. They gave me a pretty funny look when they pulled out the 30+ decks of cards.

But, in the end, everything went perfectly fine, I got two bagels, got on my flight, made the flight in Denver, and finally slept in my own bed last night... for 13 and a half hours (I was definitely tired).

Well, I hope you enjoyed reading this as much fun as it was to type (took an hour and ten minutes!). Feel free to ask questions, post comments, whatever. Thanks for reading!

Awesome!

Haha that sounds like you had a great time! :) I read the whole thing and enjoyed every bit of it. Did you have to do this writing for a LA project or something? Or do you keep a diary? I really enjoyed reading it! :) Thanks for sharing.

Oh yeah, some random girl off the internet just E-Mailed me one day and told me some fun stuff to do (like the mall) on Friday when we didn't have much to do. Just kidding... it was Katie. Thanks Katie!

Basically, California is awesome. While you were in SF you should've sent me a PM or something, we could have met up. Also, did you check out Misdirections Magic Shop?

Sounds like you had a great time. I've been dying to go to CalMagic and see Joel perform, he's such a great guy to hang around with.

Thanks for complimenting my writing, Zach. You are quite proficient at it yourself. :D California's pretty awesome, but I don't know if I could live there just because all the kids my age were so weird (Zach!). Nah, but I would love to come to LA and meet some of the awesome magicians there (Zach again!). I would also like to visit the Magic Apple... you make it sound freakin awesome. Especially that part where you have to sort cards. ;)

No, that my friend, sorting 216 decks over a span of eight hours, is torture. Paid torture.

I don't know, it just sounds like a bucket-full of fun to me. ;) At least you were paid, though. And I am still anxiously waiting by the mail-box for "you know what". ;)

Oh yes, Joel and I also discovered that him and I share the same... passion/odd habit; sniffing a deck everytime a new one is opened. I have to do it. And watching him make the big presentation of it at his show was hilarious.
