Hey there,
Couple of questions regarding NLP.
1. Who uses it successful?
2. What can it be used for?
3. Does it really work?
4. What books are best to study this area?
5. Any other book suggestions on influencing people?
Thanks a lot.
Cheers

Hey there,
Couple of questions regarding NLP.
1. Who uses it successful?

Hypnotherapists and change workers, mostly.

2. What can it be used for?

The original purpose, as I understand it, was to use language and linguistics to cause certain changes in the brain in a therapeutic way.

3. Does it really work?[/quote

Yes - but not in the ways a lot of people claim. This is not some magical chant or anything where you say a phrase a certain way and people fall at your feet. It's about building an effective ability to communicate certain ideas.

4. What books are best to study this area?

Bandler and Grinder. I think their first publication was "Structure of Magic". Avoid the "pop" NLP stuff and look for stuff that's clinically oriented. Most of the pop stuff is over exaggerated and missing the point drastically.

5. Any other book suggestions on influencing people?

Influence by Cialdini.

But I think you're asking the wrong questions. What is your ultimate goal here?

Kinda the stuff you mentioned. Say a sentence and people fall to your feet. I am studying body language and nonverbal communication.i read influence by caldini. Great book. But i want to influence them during a conversation. A bit in the direction derren brown paid with blank paper.

Yeah - Keep in mind that attempting anything you see on a TV Show is a gamble. You have no idea what went into that performance that didn't make it to the show. I suspect that those vendors were primed somehow before the cameras were rolling. Except the hotdog guy.

Craig is correct.

I have to ask - How much hypnosis have you studied? Honestly, you can study NLP and learn quite a bit, but I personally feel that if you don't have a solid foundation in hypnosis and hypnotherapy (From which NLP is derived) you probably won't be able to use it effectively.

Craig: what exactly is conversational hypnosis?

I don't have any foundations in this field. I didnt plan to study this area at my age. I know from my own personal experience that nonverbal communication and body language has a visible impact om how youre perceived.
Craig: Where is the limit to conversational hypnosis?

Craig: what exactly is conversational hypnosis?

Hypnosis instigated through conversation. ie: It's not sitting someone down in a chair and having them focus on a point and going through an induction - the suggestions are woven into the conversation and seem like part of what the person is saying.

I don't have any foundations in this field. I didnt plan to study this area at my age. I know from my own personal experience that nonverbal communication and body language has a visible impact om how youre perceived.

That's not a bad place to start. At least you don't have any bad habits to break first. I recommend you start with basic hypnosis instruction. I've read some of the Eriksonian books and also stuff by Bandler and Grinder - they tend to be fairly technical since their original purpose was instructional for therapy professionals. Without a grounding in hypnosis it's just going to go over your head.

The good news is that recently some folks have been putting out some really incredible material that is great for the beginner. I always, always recommend Anthony Jacquin's "Reality is Plastic" and "The Trilby Connection." The first is a very short book which is an excellent introduction to hypnosis, and the second is another intro-to-hypnosis course but it's a DVD set. What's great about it, is that it shows Anthony taking someone who has no grounding in hypnosis and teaching them how to hypnotize someone in public. From 0 to Street Hypnotist. And she's not super-incredible at it - so you get to see someone making the mistakes you will most likely make yourself, which for me was very reassuring. It showed me that making those mistakes isn't a huge deal and you can recover from it as long as you keep your head.

Once you've studied those and gotten some hypnosis under your belt, I'm happy to help guide you further.

Ok. . . not to put you down but, there's this thing out there called GOOGLE and if you type in your question you can find answers; here's an example:

https://www.google.com/webhp?source...=2&es_th=1&ie=UTF-8#q=conversational hypnosis

https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&es_th=1&ie=UTF-8#q=milton+erickson

I found both of those links, which lead you to a myriad of other links on this topic, in less time than it took you to type your questions. As I said, I don't mean to come off as a harda$$ but I do mean to encourage people to do some footwork on their own; it's too easily done now days.

When it comes to "learning things at your age" you are actually at the right age to start developing these skills in that it's going to take you 5+ years before getting proficient at it and of course, building your confidence to do it. The other side of this coin is that your venture into this field could help you in creating a "back up" vocation for the future; the role of hypnotherapist & counselor which ain't bad pay in and of itself, your "shows" helping you to build a practice and vice versa. One skill set that can be applied in two directions.

With this in mind I'd suggest that you pick up this book http://www.amazon.com/The-New-Encyclopedia-Stage-Hypnotism/dp/1899836020 along with Anthony Jouquin's "Reality is Plastic" in that both will help you better understand hypnosis from the performer's point of view. Other materials that would prove prudent would include both BRIDGE and PYGMALION EFFECTS by Aaron Alexander but understand, these are rather pricey bits of venture.

You practice by hypnotizing people. I've seen 13 year old kids hypnotize - your age won't stop you from being able to do it it just changes who your likely audience will be.

The only memory book I've really worked with is The Memory Book by Harry Loraine. It's a good start.
