Our 1-on-1 training section was updated tonight (as is tradition) with a new release from Dan Sperry - the Gypsy Thread.

Award winning magician Dan Sperry teaches the classic Gypsy Thread effect. An ordinary length of thread is broken into several smaller segments. Instantly, under impossible conditions - and in a completely fair manner - the pieces are restored back to their original state.

Is their a difference from this one and the one taught on the Thread DVD, other than the Candle?
You never know what type of innovations Sperry will come up with!

hey everybody,

just to clear it up, im 99% possitive that this is the same gypsy thread on Waynes Thread DVD...other then the fire. I dont have Thread, but ive talked to wayne and its the same trick...im pretty sure. Hope this helps!

hey guys, not sure what wayne taught on his Thread DVD so I can't really answer your question regarding that. JB and I had been talking one night about a month or so ago and we were talking Gypsy Thread and some ideas with it, etc. We had a few different versions and twists to it we had talked about doing but decided to go with the classic...at least for now. This is one of those routines that you can't really re-invent, its so strong and pure poetry in motion when you see somebody like Alain Choquette (sorry for mis-spelling) perform it or Suzanne, Eugene Burger, etc...

Even if you don't perform it there is a lesson to be learned with gypsy thread about letting go and letting the magic speak for itself - sure there's so many great effects, sleights, and gaffs in magic especially with how technology is letting us evolve in our methodology but sometimes it is the simple and basic stuff such as this which provokes deeper thinking sparks meaning to what you want to do with your magic.

And no, I didn't just take a hit before typing that.

Just to clear this up - the Gypsy Thread plot has been around since the Discoverie of Witchcraft in 1594. This is not a new effect, and countless performers have had their own twists and turns on it over the years. At the end of Sperry's video, we list the full credits and additional resources for this classic routine. For serious study of this effect, I would recommend checking into each.

The Gypsy Thread is a classic of magic that really speaks for itself. Actually David Blaine performed this on his first magic special for someone who looked like he didn't speak English. The performance was completely silent. Even though the Gypsy Thread was on Wayne's DVD, he was not the inventor of it. It's a very old effect.

I saw Eugene Burger perform this at a show here at Hofstra after a convention. His patter as with all of his routines, left me stunned. Something so pure can have such a huge impact.

I consider this effect to be up there with the rest of the "must learn for sake of education at the very least" effects such as Cups and Balls, and Linking Rings.

It's so simple, and direct that it hits hard. It's also fairly cheap to do, and travels small but plays big.

In short: Do it!
