Practice Under EXTREMES

Heya, I would just like to share the ways I practice so when I practice my material for other magicians and laymen I won't get nervous or worry, or even worry about hecklers or mess up.

I perform under extremes, what are these extremes you ask?

Let's back track. I now look at the magic castle as a second home for myself though I can't get there everyday or even every week. I find it very easy to perform there, not just because people there want to see magic, it is because it is nothing like the magic a perform in other places.

My practicing is performing where I work, at a boys and girls club of america. Hundreds of kids who are very serious hecklers because I am close to their age or they are younger. Even if they have no idea how something is done they won't enjoy the magic, they look at it like it is something like a puzzle to figure out. As you can see, this is something no magician wants to perform to. But I do. I do it to practice, to not get nervous. To learn how to deal with hecklers and such. Now when I perform for laymen I have little to no problems whatsoever.

Are there any others that use a method similar to mine to practice? Just wondering.

May I ask, what type of tricks do you perform for these children. I would assume they would be different that what you perform for adults? I'm sure its good practice as you've said.

Well, I perform close up magic and all of it is slight of hand, from cards to rubberbands to coins etc. Nowadays the kids have a lot of access to magic (YOUTUBE … AHHHHH) and I like to perform for the hecklers, the other kids are fooled completely, the hecklers have no idea either but they have HUGE egos so they will blurt out anything no matter how weird they sound. The magic I perform is for all ages, (Well, 10 and up) so they understand the stuff I'm saying. I hope I was a bit more clear.

I would not say that I practice with Extremes but I know that good practice with actual spectators equates to better performances at paid gigs.

There are many times I am at at gig and I will "test" out new effects. I simply tell the spectators after the gig that if a few of them would like to stick around for about 5 - 10 more minutes I would like to work on a few of my new effects. I just did it last week and it definitely works.

Some people may think this is a horrible thing to do but it works well for me and gives me more confidence with new pieces of magic. The spectator knows that it is brand new to me and that there is a chance I may not succeed but either way I benefit from succeeding or learning from my mistakes.

I always go to The Magic Castle wheneve I'm back at my LA home haha which is about twice a year. Here in Singapore , it is hard to perform because its really hot and I swear I'll sweat 10 buckets and the people here are 'different' from the USA.

i once practiced stacking four aces in one riffle shuffle while in a straight jacket hanging from the golden gate bridge upside down with bridge size plastic cards. for 11 hours with 11 pigeons pooping on my head. while 11 passerbys watched in awe. in -11 degree cold.

does that count?

Haha, Singapore?

Just as bad in India... you know what? It is actually hotter. And where I come from just as humid as singapore. So basically, horrible.
