Normally in most organizations you download the application, fill it out, send it back in with your money and you should be good to go. Now with some local chapters they will have you attend 3 meetings as a guest and then also have you do an initiation show at the club meeting which could be as simple as perform two effects in front of the group or maybe a bit more and then they normally have you exit the room and a vote is taken. I'm sure everyone's club / ring is tweaks their membership a little differently.
