Sleeving/Lapping

Hi guys. I was wondering what your opinions were on the subject of sleeving, lapping, or other methods of ditching coins, cards or other objects. I used to never like the idea of it all (particularly the sleeving), but now I am beginning to realize how useful it can be. I was also wondering what are the best sources in your opinion for learning the proper techniques for various sleeving and lapping methods or various other ditches? Is there any method that works particularly well with the more modern and tighter fitting clothing?

I don't use it that often, but when I do sleeve I like to show that I have 'nothing' in my hands (like a tenkai, or some very open palm). Then I slide up my selves to show that there's nothing in them, and as I slide them up I stick the coin up my sleeve with my fingertips.

I've actually watch Gaeton Bloom sleeve a bottle of beer and blow the minds of other magicians. . .

I admire anyone that develops this skill in that it is one of the more difficult methods associated with true Slight of Hand.

Lapping a.k.a. Tony Slydini's big secret, is one of the least used and more powerful methods going. When I use to work close-up I loved having tables where I could sit because there was so much more I could get away with. . . then again there is a rather infamous video shot in the late 1970s in which (memory serving) Bill Malone played Slydini in a student project known as "Slydini Goes to Dinner". . . making the plate full of Pasta & Meat Balls vanish will forever be stuck in my mind. . .

As a Mentalist Lapping is invaluable; especially when working with billets under a more intimate setting. You can casually drop the hot billet off and into your lap, opening and reading it at your leisure and then bring it back into if so desired. . . your lap also serves as a great Servante for key tools like your Swami, Senata Device, etc.

My mentor grew up watching Slydini and was one of the guys who went out west to learn from Vernon back in the 70's. He taught me lapping and how to make a quick servant. We spent a long time on this because back in the 90's it looked like I might end up in a wheel chair full time because of problems with my legs. Now I work a lot sitting down because of different legs issues. It opens up a whole new world to be behind a table. Bebel does a ton of lapping in his busking.

I worked on sleeving for about a year solid in college. I wanted to get more into coin work. It is still magical to watch someone who knows how to do it well.

Sleeving is a great technique. I have my own touches and thoughts on it (and teach some of it on my Sharpie marker magic DVD). Carl Cloutier and Rocco have DVDs on the subject as well. You should also look into topits as well.

Topits & certain types of pulls I'd say. . . if you like working in shirt sleeves vs. jacket go to the KJMagic.com site and ask Kevin to hook you up with Sylvester the Jester. . . Sly has an awesome topit system that allows you to work wearing a dress shirt and suspenders. . . it's perfect for gambler type acts. I've used this method for years thanks to Kevin's genius around how to use it in Mentalism
