I want to get started in mentalism, every thread ive seen suggests 13 steps to mentalism.

would that be the best place to start?
ive already got derren browns mentalism tricks, but some of it is a little advanced.

In derren browns book he talks about subliminal suggestions, has anyone had any luck using it?

if so, any tips would be great. ive tried it onced and it worked, but it was obvious what i did.

I am primarily a mentalist, and do performances daily on the OKC riverwalk. There are a number of great resources to study when getting started. The first thing you should pick up is 13 Steps to Mentalism by Corinda. After getting your feet wet with that I would recommend picking up a copy of Practical Mental Magic my Theodore Annemann, Psychological Subtelties 1&2 by Banachek, and Prism by Max Maven. Once you feel comfortable with this material 3510 by Luke Jermay is a great read for a practicioner of mentalism. This is just about everything you need, there are other great resources out there, keep your eyes open. I would stay away from Derren Brown's material until you understand how to use suggestion properly. It's really hit or miss when you don't know how to thread it into your routine properly. If you do get to the point where you feel comfortable using some suggestion, Pure Effect is a very good book by Derren, and 7 Deceptions by Luke Jermay is high impact all the way. You can get most of the 7 Deceptions in DVD form if you prefer if you purchase Skullduggery by Luke Jermay(DVD)

Hope this helps,
Zack

In the not to distant future
i mhave actually had a fair amount of success using the subliminal suggestions for objects, cards, number and so on. the best way to do this is to just be confident that it will work. when i first tried efects like that i would fail because i was thinking oh im going to fail at this. so know that it will work and the majority of the time it will. you just have to get used to being confident. As a mentalist for maybe 3 years i would say 13 steps to mentalism has helped me greatly and recommend it. also check out banachek and jeremy.

I would also recommend Jay Sankey's Hemispheres (which are all killer!) and maybe his best mentalism video, all his mentalism effects are fantastic and most of the effects in the hemispheres video are little to no sleight of hand but pack a HUGE punch... :)
