ENTER: Devil's Advocate
In truth what this lad is doing is the exact same exercise Jim Stinemeyer, Max Maven and at least a few dozen other innovative minds I'm aware of, do (though they don't post things to Youtube). It is a very powerful exercise in creativity when done properly. . . that is, when the individual is in the position to do effective research or else knows a wide variety of methods by which to cultivate the new effect.
If this individual has studied Magic for less than 5 years however, I would suggest you simply shoot for a weekly challenge on the creative level so that you can better research and polish said effect. Too, you MUST challenge yourself to develop at least a half-dozen or more practical methods for pulling off said effect so that your viewers can judge which version seems cleanest and the most entertaining as well as bewildering. This adds to your challenge and turns it into a valuable learning lesson in that you must do some serious R&D up-front and then face critique by your peers. This is however, the path taken by the majority of the creative minds within the magic world.
THE BIG NO NO . . . is to NOT market any single one effect 5 minutes after you get big kudos on it. If marketing is your plan then at the bare minimum, you keep the best rated routine for yourself and as a few out there do, market the 2nd most popular. But I'd go further and tie all 12 routines into a single eBook & DVD or Download package so buyers have the written and video instructions along with side-notes, a bibliography and THE HISTORY behind the effect/routine and its evolution. You will see far stronger, more positive support by doing things in this manner than pooping out single effects here and there throughout the year.
So yes, this is an excellent exercise but don't just go off in a random way moshing things together and thinking them "original". Actually challenge yourself so that there is a direct and tangible array of benefits that go well beyond showing off dumb stuff.
ONE MORE THING. . . I'd hope you don't plan on exposing your methods via the YouTube broadcasts. Though the routine may be "yours" you are still exposing techniques and similarly, lessening the value behind your new piece.
Best of luck!
