Ryan was very excited to say the least. He was going to have a mentor. Someone to show him the ropes. He was actually going to learn magic, and for free!
He couldn't have been happier...
A FEW DAYS LATER...
Ryan Pulled on his shoes and out the front door he ran, stopping near the end of the driveway. He had forgot his cards on the kitchen counter. He dashed back inside and snatched them up. How could he learn without his trusty Bicycles????
Again, he flew outside, this time thinking more clearly so he would not make the mistake of forgetting the all to important magic paraphonilia. At last, he began to make his way down to the magic shop. He marched right on by all of the Diners and Restaurants that were so busy at this time in the afternoon. However, he did stop of at "The Grille", just to find out if Mike was in yet.
He was. Ryan approached him, waving a hand excitedly, attempting to gain his attention.
Mike noticed, and strode up to Ryan with his usual, goofy smile.
"What's going on Ryan? Haven't seen you this week." The kind man noted.
"Yeah, sorry about that." Ryan said sullenly.
"Hey! Don't worry about it. You shouldn't be wasting money on this greasy food all the time anyway. You'll get fat!" He joked.
"Yeah. Well, Just thought I might pop in and see if you were here."
"Oh. You going somewhere today?" Mike said inquisitively.
"Yup. I am going down to Joe's. We got smething planned this afternoon." Ryan said with the smallest bit of excitement in his voice.
"Oh yeah? What are you guys up to?" He asked.
"Well, I am not supposed to tell. Can you keep a secret, Mike?" Ryan asked.
"Well, I supose if I couldn't keep a secret, then I wouldn't be a magician, would I?" He said smiling.
"True." Ryan shrugged. "Well, he gave me this book called...um...Royal....Royal...Royal something."
"Royal Road to card magic?"
"Yeah! That;s the one!" He cried. "But I was having problems with it. It was just hard for me to learn from a book, so I gave it back to Joe. Then he offered me Magic lessons instead!" Ryan said, his hands shaking at his sides in excitement. "And that's where I am going right now."
"What time do you have lessons at?" Mike asked.
"From 2:30 until 3:30 every Wednesday." Ryan replied.
"2:30? Better get a move on then. It's always good to be a few minutes early to important meetings." Mike said smiling.
"Good idea! I'll talk to you in a couple days, Mike." Ryan said heading for the door.
"Okay. See you then."
And just like that they went there seperate ways.
Ryan, walked briskly down the street until he reached the glorious building entitled, "Joe's Magic Shoppe". He twisted the knob and walked in. He quickly glanced back and forth, scanning the room for Joe. and then he tapped Ryan on the shoulder. It was eery how he could do that.
"Good Afternoon, Joe." Ryan said extending his hand to the man.
He took his hand and shook it. "Nice to see you Ryan. Let me introduce you to the other man that works here." He said leading Ryan up to he counter.
"How you doin'?" The guy behing the counter inquired.
"Good."
"I'm steve." He said.
"Nice to meet you." Ryan replied.
"Steve will handle the shop on Wednesdays while we have our lessons. Other days he might just help me around the shop or stock shelves or perform outside or inside for potential customers." Jow said. "Shall we get our lesson started then?"
"Sure." Ryan said unable to control his excitement.
"Okay then. Steve, We are going into the backroom to have our lesson. I'll be back out around three thirty. You're in charge untilo then. And please, no interuptions in less it is urgent. And I mean REALLY urgent. Okay?"
"No problem, Joe." Steve said.
Joe and Ryan went through a door and ended up in the back room of the store. It was surprisingly big and on either side there were piles of boxes labled with names of magical effects. In the center of the room there was a large table.
"Take a seat, Ryan." Joe said.
Ryan obeyed and placed his pack of cards on the table.
"Oh you won't need those today." Joe told him.
Ryan looked puzzled.
"Today I am going to give you a quiz to see what you know. Okay?" He asked.
Ryan nodded as Joe handed Ryan a packet of papers and a pen. Ryan began his quiz while Joe produced a soda from a refrigerator and placed it infront of Ryan. The quiz consisted of many bizzare questions such as...
"One of the oldest magic effects to date is the Cups & Balls. True or False?"
"Do you prefer Stage (Stage effects.) Close up (Cards, coins, etc.) Street(Busking) ro Other? Why?"
"Name ten Magicians."
By three thirty Ryan had finished the test and was preparing to leave.
"What did that do?" Rytan asked Joe.
"Well, once I evaluate it I will be able to know more about you and what we can work on. Also, during our sessions you will learn a bit about the history of magic also. I find that it's quite interesting and an important thing to know for any magician."
"Oh, okay." Ryan said.
"Well then, I will see you nex Wednesday, Ryan. Same Time, Same place."
"Yup." He replied and left the store, waving to Steve on the way out.
Ryan didn't know what he felt that day, but as he walked out he knew that there was something about Joe that made him seem like a good teacher. Ryan, knew that Joe would be a valuable tool in his magic career...
