Mentalism is a performing art - some might say, a 'branch' of magic - that focuses on the mind and thoughts (ESP, psychokinesis, suggestion, mind reading, and the like). Some would argue that mentalism is as close to real magic as one can get. It certainly has had an impact on the current state of magic.

Books like Tony Corinda's 13 Steps To Mentalism and Theodore Annemann's Practical Mental Magic inspired a new generation of mentalists to innovate and reinvent classic plots and ideas - making them appeal to current and broader audiences. Some popular mentalists of our generation include Chan Canasta, David Berglas, Derren Brown, Banachek, and Luke Jermay, to name just a few.

Many magicians are interested in taking the plunge into mentalism, though they're not sure where to begin. Others simply want to add some mental effects to their performing repertoire. Today, we'll present you with a few recommendations from our team of staff and artists pertaining to tricks that use an ordinary pack of playing cards (which we're all familiar with), but have a mentalism 'feel' to them:

: : COMMERCIAL / / INTERMEDIATE / / $4.95
Learn THE effect that sparked Dan and Dave Buck's interest in card magic. David Blaine performed this effect during a commercial (hence the title) for his David Blaine : Street Magic TV Special. Sleights taught: Riffle Force, Click Change + variations. Direct and effective.

: : BLIND / / EASY / / $5.95
daniel+Madison returns with a demonstration of blind coincidence - a timeless prediction plot. Two decks with different backs are used. Nothing more, nothing less. A free choice from the spectator leads to one impossible conclusion. No duplicates. No doubles. No possible explanation.

: : ELECTION / / INTERMEDIATE / / $6.95
Chris Kenner's powerful take on a classic. An experiment in coincidence. The spectator makes all of the choices... and you produce a miracle. Two versions are taught. Simple, powerful, and versatile - this is Election.

SPECIAL PROMO : For those wishing to purchase all of the above, we've setup a special promotion. Order all three videos and receive a 20% discount for this week ONLY.

Be sure to check out last week's 1-ON-1 SESSIONS - Making Cents - and check back next Tuesday at 11:00am EST for another edition. See you then!

Yay, it's mentalism's turn! :) (personally, I'd call these "mental magic", but that's just me)

Just to clarify, the effects were selected more for those magicians looking to get started in mentalism - using an object we're all familiar with (playing cards).

Although I wouldn't necessarily group any of the aforementioned tricks strictly into the mentalism category, they do all have a mentalism vibe to them - and could definitely be presented as such. I would agree that 'mental magic' would probably be a more appropriate term.

Hope this clears things up. Rock'n.

As jon said - if you're looking to get started in mentalism, check them out, see if you like them. If you decide to get serious about mentalism, then you need to look elsewhere - there are a lot of topics recommending exactly where.

I wouldn't really say Commercial is mentalism. I'd probably have put Aaron Fisher's backslip force in here instead. But that's just me. Ah well, I'm not complaining, just commenting.

Well the I see election as more mentalism, because some people do this I am physic after I do it (they have told me, and I tell them I am not), while Blind and Commercial seem more like mental magic tricks.
