Recently I've been trying to the thumb cut. However, the length of my thumb is shorter than the width of the card. I'm unable to 'grab' the upper packet with my thumb, any helpful tips?

Alright, today, I'll be my coach....
"Get better.."

haha well, try placing the side of the deck on your palm so you thumb cna get a grip. Notice, when you see people do it, they re-grip it from a regular grip.

So the trick is the grip. Try to find anyway to get your thumb across.
Hope it helps.

the further away from the base your thumb that the OPPOSITE long side is, the easier it will be to grip. meaning that if the long side closest to you is right up against the base of your thumb it'll be a ***** to do (well maybe tudor could do it) and if its closer to the base of the fingers itd be easier.

also, try having a bit of "bow" to the deck by doing a bunch of springs and one-hand shuffles and stuff, the bending will make it alot easier to grab.

dont give up (or if you want to just use bridge sized cards till you get better)

but seriously Ive seen tiny hands doing insane cuts so it's not like its impossible you have to experiment around and focus really intently on whats working and what isn't.

mini deck?

and i think its the handling. i dont think any move in magic needs particular hand sizes- just enough practice and a different grip would suffice.

Apparantly dan or dave (or both) had this problem. So they came up with the grip that you now see in their "erdnase go round". I've also got kinda short thumbs, and it's incredibly difficult to do a thumb cut. I definetally wouldn't put it at impossible though... I would reccomend experimenting with some slight variations to get into a possition that allows you to grap the edge... sadly I don't have one to describe myself though :p.
