Well I was wondering what moves, flourishes, passes, etc a 14 year old magician needs to be a successful magician and create original effects. I am asking this because I will be submitting two different TnR card. The first method is extremely simple, but if done right can be extremely elusive. This second one is very deceiving. Both gimmicks can be made at home.

From my experience... the fundamentals are the most important things to learn. The double lift has been a constant effort of mine since I began several years ago. I might have been doing this for several years, but many of those years have been wasted due to misunderstanding a few basic things. Read all that you can. Watch all that you can. Learn to read between the lines.

This is tricky, because I could tell you all the different ways to accomplish a certain effect, and like Asher said, the double lift is very important, HOWEVER just know PRESENTATION is the most important thing in your magic.

If you are entertaining enough, they won't be looking for "the secret move".
I find comedy to be the best misdirection.

You could have a career in magic by only knowing a good force, bottom control, top change, double lift, key card principal and maybe a peek. Oh and some magicians wax. That being said, its very easy to learn much more than that and do it effectively, try not to become trapped in the mindset of how techniques should be used, come up with your own. Get one of those books that has hundreds of moves in it, Card College or something like that.

Back in Time
You would end up being a better magician if you learned how to build a vast rapport with the people you are performing for.

Also, if you avoided the things that most current performers do. Corny jokes (OK maybe one two corny jokes are fine), bad jokes (One bad joke might be OK as long you acknowledge that it was bad), cheesy used car salesmen attitude. etc.

That moves, flourishes, passes...and your new tricks...are meaningless...if you don´t know how to perform and conect with people...even knowing all the moves and tricks of the world...you will be a "bedroom magician" and nothing else....

To be successful, spend your time learning and performing and NOT trying to create just to sell the effect. Dont try to sell something unless you've performed it a hundred times for different audiences. Your time is better spent learning the fundamentals and your creativity will come naturally as you learn to make effects your own.

Get a bunch of books. For cards get Royal Road, Scarne on Card Tricks, Expert Card Technique, Card Control or Card College, Card College Light / Lighter / Lightest. For general magic get Mark Wilson's Complete Course and then Tarbell. For theory, get Magic and Showmanship, Five Points in Magic, Scripting Magic and Transformations - Turning Tricks into Magic.

As Luis said, Go.Out.Perform.
