Hecklers!

"There is no place for challenge in professional magic." – Al Goshman

I think Steerpike and Thrallmind, as always, have delivered solid advice…and as always, it has been ignored.

Dear Brian Tudor lover – your advice in attempting to make your audiences fear your “skill” by making them look like fools with your “fast hands” is the most ABSURD statement ever.

I am concerned over the poor message you are delivering to new magicians.

I have never dealt with a “Heckler” – I have met a number of people that approach what I do in a different way. Some are angry they are fooled, some love it, some are nervous about what is going to happen and shy away, some get confrontational – but for the most part…as an adult, and not a child fascinated by his own masturbatory craft, I use my communication skills to alleviate any concerns that people are displaying when they are watching FREE entertainment. Remember, even though a company might be paying for it – the people that often watch me usually have no personal investment – so why would they overreact to what I am doing?

Newbies to magic – often the way you present what you are doing can create a challenge situation, that elicits a heckler reaction. ALSO - often the way you handle how others deal with it will mean booking a show...or not. Remember, the lay public thinks it is there job to “figure it out” and our jobs to “fool” – in a way, this isn’t wrong – at least at magic’s basic concept. If you can involve people in the fun and make it about sharing an experience together…they will want to be fooled. I think if they are watching a Show off – challenges can occur more – or if they feel they are being conned by “fast hands” then they will not see this as a fun experience...but enough about Brian Tudor. It is like some guy coming up to show them how fast they can solve a rubix cube – who cares!? Amazing> sure. Magic? No.

Sure, some people may legitimately be jerks – but how is the answer trumping their ignorance with ignorance…not even intelligent witty ignorance, just highlighting you know something they don’t. Hey look, the card is not the card you thought it was…dumb dumb…like if you talked to a Doctor and questioned his diagnosis…he would say where do you think your Hyoid bone is…and when you guess…he is like…WRONG DUMB DUMB!! Who is the doctor now? Point taken?

However BrianationX…since I know you won’t take my advice, I will take yours. I will start fighting fire with fire and become more confrontational and challenging, I have been watching Tudor stuff on Youtube, and I have not made it my personal grudge to bad mouth what he is trying to pass as magic, every chance I get. I will make sure that NOBODY does his work, and any time I see someone doing Sybil or any other junk….I will slap the cards out of their hands. Afterall, I am just challenging them.

and your right its probably not the best move.
but suprisingly ive never dealt with a heckler.
ive been really lucky.after performing for five years the most ive gotten was a guy who constantly wanted to shuffle the cards.Thats it.

I've had a few hecler's throughout my magic career. I just stop the performance and walk away. That way, the heckler now looks like a @$$hole to everyone else who wants to be entertained.

Finally Morg, you've seen the light. If only all magicians could be like this, they would be respected SO much more and the industry would truly flourish.

A Heckler will try to ruin your routines by saying stupid stuff in the climax or middle of an efect
Hecklers want to make you look like a fool infront of others
They always think they know whats going on an will tell everyone around
They will take your cards and shuffle them
They will also challenge you
If you give up to a Heckler you will look weak and bad to the ladies around
What you should do is a routine that they can never figure out.
to make them look extra dumb
I do Brian tudor's Wrong answer
Ask them "whats the name of this card" {the 2 of diamonds}
"Its called the Ace Of Clubs"
then do A control to the bottom and ask them "were do you think the card is"
{its on the top} "ah no its on the bottom"
Bring a Blank card and ask "is this your card" {no}
Then color change it
these simple little tricks usually shut the Heckler

"As a performer, there is nothing better than turning the whole room against a Heckler.
It is crucial to force the Heckler off balance as early as possible, so that he is always one step behind every move, and is constantly playing catch-up.
When all the sleights are solid,
and the moves hit hard and are thrown out quickly like a precision boxing combination, it is impossible for anyone,
let alone some sorry Heckler, to get a piece of you.
You are playing a game of catch me if you can, and he can't. "

Wow...this has been one of the most shocking reads I've had in a long time.

I've worked plenty of situations that were less than ideal, and challenging the heckler is the worst mistake I could make, in my opinion.

First, making my audience look like fools is not a goal of mine.

Second, I respect magic too much to give the rest of the table a bad taste simply to shut down one of them who's being rude.

Third, and this is important, if you give in to them with a challenge or losing your temper, you're losing. They got what they wanted, and you look like the fool. They controlled you, rather than the other way around.

Finally, I might be unique in this, but I work in bars in tough areas. I've seen fights break out where broken bottles and glasses were used as make-shift knives. I'm comfortable in this area, I'm born and bred here. Still, I have the smarts to know when to walk away, because my "shutting up" the heckler could then lead to my getting stabbed on the way to my car.

It's simply street smart to deal with things like a gentleman.

Anyone else getting annoyed by the mods editing our posts. How the hell can we speak our minds if we constantly edited. Seriously 4th graders cuss more then we do.
All moderators edit posts / threads solely for the purpose of removing any disrespectful and inappropriate comments. Content of the posts themselves NEVER changes. If a post is deleted, it is because it contributed absolutely nothing to the topic at hand other than blatant negativity.
