Hey people,
I was wondering what you guys thought of Sankey
When I first started off, he was one of my main sources of information on the art. I got around 4 of his DVDs and found them awesome. There was plenty of material and nothing is under-teached. But as time passed and what not, I found that he began repeating his material a lot and just changing the context. For example, the Paperclipped trick. He has that in atleast 3 DVDs + the single DVD. As time passed more, I found that he seems to be more and mroe into making as many products as possible and earning as much. Some of the stuff he makes now is just crap... no offense by the way.
Although hes a great magician, I find that he has changed for the worse in the past few years.

I don't own his material but went to one of his lectures. Excellent material and magician. One of the funniest magicians I've met as well.

Magic isn't always about the sleight...
His sleights maybe dead simple and repetitive, the presentation, is what you should pay attention to.
That's my two cents.

I completely agree with you SciffyDof. And, his crazy talking and antics get really old really fast and now I simply can't even watch some of his DVDs since his terrible jokes annoy me so much. I personally, really dislike Sankey. His material is all bad and he makes WAY to many DVDs with the same crap on them. Hope this didn't offend anyone, I may sound a bit harsh but that is just my true opinion.

may I ask what material you find to be "crap"?

hm...
I dont actually mean crap
but I mean why-bother-to-make-a-dvd-for-this-one-trick-that-aint-that-good
for example "Zero Gravity". Not a bad trick but 13 dollars for 1 DVD for 1 trick? comeon... I would respect him more if he made DVDs for the sake of the magic community instead of filling his wallet.

I loved his stuff from before. His old things are like DAMN! but now... meh...

never said his sleights were simple.
He has made some of the hardest moves I have encountered: Witchata Slip, etc.
And I dont really like his presentation either. He makes too many gags, which makes you think "when does the magic start?". When you do, youre still thinking about it.

yeah, it seems that sanky's material just doen't fool magicians, (or me for that matter).
I've also noticed an increased production of dvd's this past year or two, just to put more money in his pocket i recon.
Also, the methods themselves are usually dissapointing, and too "Ballsy"
alot of courage to perform his material i required.
it seems every month he has something new, he needs to take more time to perfect what he is releasing, because it is very average.
you can't have a good idea, and sell it to the public if it is not a well thought out one.
and no offense, but i really find his comedy videos, not that funny, sort of emarassing.
sorry jay.

Ahem, if I may...

Who cares whether the material fools you OR other magicians? How often do you perform (professionally- for a fee) for magicians? How often are you TRULY going to fool a magician anyway?? Why does that even matter to you? The fact is, Jays material is workable and strong, and again, so what if you don't like his presentations- That just encourages you to work on your own!

My two cents, are thrown in. I look forward to the back fire.

Your right it isnt about impressing your fellow magicians its about giving laymen the expierence of magic as a whole. You can always work on your own patter presentation as well anyway

I enjoy a lot of his stuff but I do not like how he releases so much material it seems like he thinks of an effect and then puts it on DVD right away.
IDK just my 2 cents.

What's wrong with that anyways? Professional magicians usually keep their effects for themselves at first to gain a reputation amongst magicians and lay people. And partly to work on the patter and presentation to suit them and this process usually takes more than a year. And partly because they only want to publish great stuff; they try to think outside the box all the time and this doesn't have to be a great thing. You should try to think inside the box a little and try to improve magic while others are too busy trying to think outside the box. Jay Sankey's creativity is evident in the methods of his effects. And he releases new and creative methods for magic. He doesn't teach presentations or patter but rather he encourages creativity and he just gives you insight on the million possibilties of magic.

Hope this helps.

I find that his methods are getting more and more tacky.
He had some pretty good sleights back then and good original material.
The stuff you see nowadays is like one of his old tricks with one sleight and move changed, then he publishes it as a new DVD.
