The Official Spam-

There is no official spam for this one, so just go watch the video!

The Download-

It may have just been my internet connection, but it took quite a while for this to download for me (at least 25-30 minutes). And after that it took another 10+ minutes for it to buffer in Windows Media Player. Other than that, though, it went fine and I was able to download it on my first try.

The Video-

The quality of this isn't to theory11 or Penguin caliber, but it's still pretty good. There were definitely no problems hearing or seeing what Dan was saying or doing. No problems here, except I wasn't a huge fan on the music and the 80's style video. But I can definitely deal with that- I'm more concerned with the effect and the teaching of said effect.

One other thing I didn't care for about the video is that the music was pretty loud, and Dan talked kind of softly. So in-between sections, the music would be on, and then Dan would start talking as the music faded out. I found myself having to turn the volume up when Dan started speaking, and down when the music started playing. But no biggie.

The History-

Dan basically just describes where the inspiration for the trick came from (an old magic book which I won't name because it may or may not lead to exposure).

Items Needed-

This section is pretty straightforward, and the title is self explanatory. You will need one thing that may make people not like this effect or not use it, but I've never minded using these. In fact, I use them quite often.

Set Up-

Once again the title is pretty self explanatory.

I'm not really sure where I stand on the setup. It took me a while my first time, but I'm sure after doing it 10-20 times, you could have it done in well under two minutes. I really like the illusion that this provides (you'll see what I mean if you buy it), and I also like the fact that you can set it up once in the morning, and then walk around with it setup the entire day. However, you can only do the effect one time once you have it set up. So that is a bit of a downfall. Unless of course you don't do a certain thing, which I think not doing would take away from the effect.

Performance One-

This is the first method of performing it, in which you simply "throw" the card at the shoelaces, and it is "penetrated" by the shoelace. I don't like this one as much, because it requires a sleight that I'm not terribly comfortable doing... yet.

Performance Two-

This is the one that we've all seen where he springs the cards at the shoelaces, and it links onto them. There is a slight problem with this version, which he tells you to hope doesn't happen. But he also teaches you a quick easy way to get rid of this problem completely, so don't worry about that.

Performance Three-

In this version you use a gimmicked card to make the effect cleaner. It's basically the same as performance two, just cleaner and safer to perform. He also teaches a version using a fan instead of the spring.

Performance Four-

This is the torn corner version that I'm sure we've all been wondering about. Although it does kind of give away the method to *other* effects (cough**AngleZero**cough), it's a freakin great convincer, and will go right by your spectators. And yes, it is actually the same corner.

Actual Live Performance-

This was cool- Dan performed the effect for a spectator in the studio, from start to finish, using the torn corner. Very awesome!

The Teaching-

The teaching here was phenomenal- I had no questions or things I was confused about when the video was over, and Dan was a very entertaining teacher. No complaints about the teaching.

Overall-

I like this effect a lot, and I think it's something that I will probably use. I love how visual it is, and I really like the torn corner version. I tried this out on my siblings a few minutes ago (yeah I know, I should practice more- it was just a test run), and they ran and told my Mom about how cool it was. If they react good, then I know it's a good effect. If it's not a good effect... they're very honest. This was a great effect and video, and would definitely be worth the money!

Great review. Thanks for the compliments, I know Dan doesnt come on the forums very often but he always talks about how much it means to him that people enjoy his effects. He is a really sweet person and he really tries to create effects that people will use. Laced is just one example of many efffects that will be coming soon. We will also post the very funny interview with Dan at www.papercranemagic.com
