Cooler names catch my attention more. If I were at a magic shop, I would check out a trick called "Witness" as opposed to "The Transforming Joker Locked in a Ziplock Bag".

You're missing the point... the title doesn't have to be like that, I'd just like to see less one-word "street magic" titles. The title of Witness used to be Deuce Bag when it was released originally in one of Lee's manuscripts.

It's just the current trend. It does make it easier to call out names without acronyms. Video game forums are acronym cRaZy. It can be annoying. I don't see the trend shifting soon.

Honestly I like Deuce Bag better. it was probably changed due to the dirty play on words. The idea behind these one word titles is that it's easy to remember and it's catchy as hell. If I didn't know that Witness and Deuce bag were the same trick i probably would check out Witness first because it sounds so hardcore and cool.

I agree.

Infact when ever anyone asks me what effect I am performing, I do not say 'Panic'

I will tell them

'This trick is called, I have a deck of cards, and I take the kings away, and then I put them in my pocket, and then I make the rest of the deck dissapear, and turn into the kings, and then where the kings where, the rest of the deck is now there trick.'

Much simpler!

I have no idea if this was posted, don't feel like reading.... But Panic was named after a band Aaron likes. Widespread Panic.

Well atleast it yields no search results :p.

Point is: "A trick does not a name make."

If it's a good trick, how much does the name really matter anyway?

Did anyone pick up "andthensome" because of the name?... Acutally, I got ten bucks that says someone did. But that's not the point.

Ha, there's been a few good threads on this.
I like the names, but that doesn't cover the fact that the names are a marketing tool. That's not really a bad thing, if you want to know what the trick does, look at the description, that should do the trick.

right it's their trick, let them have fun with the names. I know if I released a trick, the name would have nothing to do with the effect. but that would just be to throw people off because i have a cruel sense of humor.

It's that philosophy that led to a number of movies in the 80's being titled things like Obsession and The Edge of Passion etc.

Amazing that the company continues to give nonsense titles to everything they make and are still able to move so many units of product.

Cooler names catch my attention more.

Then I can't wait to see how fast you part with your money when they release a DVD called The Fonz.

Infinitely better title. Earns my seal of approval.

I think it is because laymen wont be able to find it easy on the internet if something is names "riot" vs "card rising to the top of the pack trick"

Am I the only one disturbed by the fact that most people's grasp on the English language is so poor that the only titles they can think of are either clunky descriptions of action or a single word with 2 or 3 syllables?

I'm just beating back a lengthy whinge at this point.
