Yes, I do. Some people would, some people wouldn't. Some people do care and some do have that sympathy.

I take it you havent gone hungry before. And I mean real hunger.
Or studied psychology much for that matter.
If the world were kind enough then those people wouldnt have to resort to stealing.

Luckily some poor souls are close to churches where they can get a meal.
But not all of them are that lucky. Especially people in corrupt as hell towns all around the world.

It's not true though in my mind. You cannot say EVERYONE would go against their morals. If everyone would go against their morals, our world would be heartless. There are people in this world that would die instead of going against their morals because they stand strong in what they believe in.

But see not everyone needs to go against their morals, not everyone is in a desperate situation and being misguided to do wrong. Also the people the martyrs you speak of is BS. If they are faced with someone with no morals hell bent on killing them, do you not think they will fight back and possibly even kill in self defense? What if your attacker is a girl? What if the attacker is of religious importance?

Even though you say "some people" it's clear you're still thinking in terms of absolution.

As sentient beings, we have a choice not to act on our desires. But in times of desperation, sometimes the cost/benefit analysis doesn't come out the way you want it to. Sometimes, you're not rational enough to have the luxury of a cost/benefit analysis.

Again, I do not want to cast aspersions, but I'm betting that 99% of the people here have never had to live in conditions where they didn't have enough money to eat for weeks at a time. Never been homeless. And thus you don't know what you would do. Do you think the Donner party ever thought they would eat another human being to stay alive? Do you think they did that because they were morally weak? Granted, that's an extreme example, but it makes my point that when our backs are to the wall, we start considering things we normally wouldn't.

That you would blow Jane's analogy of "going hungry versus someone else losing a dollar" into the whole, "What if it's more than a dollar?" makes me wonder who you're trying to convince: us or yourself.

Who said everyone??? Stop putting these words in your posts when not a single person has said it.

I believe a huge a majority of people would go against their morales to survive. You aren't thinking about your morales when you haven't eaten anything for three days, your thinking what the hell can I do to get some food.

I'm not saying you do this without secondary thought, most people who have the morales do feel bad but push comes to shove. It's just how the brain works, when you are brought down to bare necessities with nothing else to show for, your brain will run on instincts not morales and a feel good attitude.

Like Keoke said, someone who may be against killing somebody in any sort of way may kill somebody. You have a gun and somebody has a knife, you have literally a second to react, not think but simply react. You shoot them where???

Head, chest, arm, leg, and maybe your thinking the leg because it's a safe bet because they won't die. I'll remind you of a certain football player getting shot in the leg but in an artery and later died. You aren't thinking about your morales, you just aren't so please stop thinking that people would be.

Some people will stick to them, and do whatever is possible to not go against them, but like I said push comes to shove.

Post number 2 by Morgician. He said "anyone". That was my initial point that I disagreed with, saying that not EVERYONE, will go against their morals.

Back to the original thread topic,

would I use my knowledge for magic, misdirection, sleight of hand and gimmicks to steal? When it came down to the wire?

Indeed, however I would attempt to busk, I'd be willing to go hungry for about a day, but probably not even that long before stealing something like an apple or something like that.

But why speculate, just ask someone who has been there and done that.
