Here's a freebie from an idea booklet of mine entitled "New Beginnings".
This trick involves an iPod Touch/iPhone. I've performed this for friends at school and real life people on the streets, and I must say it KILLS! Their faces melt apart, and they FREAK! Here ya go.
Just Lines
Effect:
You bring out a deck of cards, and ask them to stop at any card they wish. They call out stop. You show them their card, and simply lose it into the deck. Jokingly, you guess their card wrong. Take out your iPhone or iPod Touch and open up a Whiteboard App. Show them that you can draw random lines. You ask them to do so as well. After they draw lines, remind them of the card they selected. Tell them to just imagine it appear on the screen. Show the lines one more time to the audience. Throw the iPod into the air, revolving it in a 360 degree rotation. Once it lands back in your hands, the lines have suddenly formed into their card. Let them go crazy and tell you that you are some sort of demon. That is Just Lines.
Inspiration:
I was logged on the theory11 forums, when I came across a post by Jeff Prace, creator of GUM. I saw that he was releasing an effect with an iPod Touch/iPhone. I was messing around with something similar earlier in the year, and it sparked me to make it anew. So that’s how this little miracle landed in here, it works 100%, and totally impromptu.
Specifics:
- Very little Setup
- Spectators go crazy at the reveal
- Can perform this anytime, anywhere, as long as you have your iPod Touch/iPhone on hand.
Method & Explanation:
The main secret to this effect lies within your own iPod/iPhone. It’s quite devious actually, and goes unnoticed throughout the entire effect. Your iPod/iPhone can secretly take screenshots, and those screenshots travel straight to your Saved Photos. You’ll see what I mean later, but for now, let’s get onto the setup and explanation.
For the setup, the first thing you need to do is get a card you want to force, and place it either on the top or bottom of the deck, depending on how you want to force it. The next thing you need to do is download an app from the App Store that lets you draw with your finger. I use the Whiteboard Lite app, as it’s completely free; however there are other apps that are free too. Open up the app and draw the card you want to force, like this: 7 of diamonds. Except, you would draw a 7 and the diamond shape instead of the word. Now, you will take your screenshot by clicking the Hold button and the Home button at the same time. A white flash will appear to let you know it took the picture. It will also make a noise, but because you want it to go unnoticed, turn your volume down. This will transfer that screenshot over to the last photo in your Saved Photos. Now that your setup is ready, let’s learn how to do the effect.
Now that you know you have to force a card, you can do this in any way, shape, or form you want, just as long as it’s FORCED. Once they have the FORCED card in mind, lose it, and forget about it, you don’t need it anymore. As an option, you can jokingly guess a wrong card, just to humor your audience. Open the Whiteboard app, and explain to them you are going to draw random lines. Once you have drawn small, segmented lines, ask them to do the same. Once they are done, step back and make eye contact. This is very important as you need misdirection to do the secret moves. As they are looking at you, take a screenshot. Now, click the Home button, and quickly click the Photos app. Click the Saved Photos section, and scroll to where the lines are. Click that image, and press on the screen to get rid of the info. You need to do this as fast as you can, so practice these motions until you are like Speedy Gonzales and Flash combined. You explain that they could have selected any card they wanted, blah blah blah, while doing these actions. Tilt the iPod/iPhone back down directing their eyes towards the screen. Be careful not to tilt, as the accelerometer built in the iPod/iPhone will cause the image to rotate, which is NOT what you want. As you throw this into the air, spin it counter clockwise. While releasing, swipe the screen to the right with your thumb. This will switch the photos to the image you previously setup. As it lands, they will see that the lines “morphed” into their selected card. Once they are freaking out, click the Home button, and you are clean! You can play around with this as much as you want, and add several more “changes” and applications (no pun intended) to make it fit you more. Or if it already fits, that’s great! I hope you enjoyed this quick, walkaround effect which can be done anytime, anywhere, to anybody!!!
Cheers,
Casey Rudd
