So last night, at my local IBM ring, we had a lecture by Las Vegas coin magician, Mickey Silver.

He entertained us with his unique and wonderful style, showing us many wonderful things of his, like his retention vanish, his coin through glass, and swallowing coins. Much of his lecture was about the presentation he uses, which is very cool.

One very enjoyable experience was of his coin routine, The Human Slot Machine.

Watch it here:

His retention vanish is absolutely amazing. Just the way he does everything. And seeing it live was just wonderful.

I really loved his lecture, and would recommend going to one if you have a chance.

the guy has chops, thats undeniable, but the presentation and overall effect of the routine was so terribly patronizing and irritating i found it hard to enjoy. This is one of the biggest reasons i dont enjoy watching older performance styles because the way the magic is presented is just lame and juvenile. The sound effects, the lame dance to a hackneyed song and the terrible over smiling gave it a very "skilled creepy uncle" feel to it. BUT his skill is impressive. My issue is more with the way he presents his skill, i have the same issue with several older performers and a few newer ones. Michael Kras springs to mind. Again not a personal attack just my feelings on that style of performance. Compare displays of skill with that feel to something like Slydini, or The Professor or Eric Jones. skill is there but its refined, elegant, sophisticated and smooth. Thats what i enjoy more.

I very much agree Josh, maybe not as much against the classic style of performing, but I definitely find a lot of entertainment in the style of SLydini or Eric Jones. They seem just very smooth, and refined, which is a great combination for a magician.

My thoughts exactly. I really dislike the older magicians like this, though some have amazing skill they dumb down their magic this way.

I hate to ressurect the dead here, but this was brought to my attention and I'm wondering if you can explain why I was referenced here in terms of "patronizing magicians"

He seriously made coins look like D'Lites. Quite impressive. However, I do agree about the style issues. He does come off a bit as a "creepy Uncle."

Interesting comments on his style. I think it's great. Because, unless I'm reading it wrong, it's SUPPOSED to be cheesy. He's being ironic. I find it interesting in this day and age where irony is second nature to most people that a lot of people on this thread can't see that. He's having a go at cheesy performers all the while displaying AMAZING card skills.

Maybe I'm wrong...

I thought the same, people seem to take that as a serious performance whereas I thought it was a light hearted joke.

I'm glad this was bumped though, I really enjoyed that video.

Well, I really enjoyed it and like any other have said: awesome skill there. I don't do coin magic yet so I really don't "know" what's going on, but he really can manipulate the coin. Loved the final.

Clearly he is "acting" cheezy. He's inside a carnival cart doing this routine for goodness sakes. A serious performance would really look ridiculous in such a backdrop. Mickey Silver is a legend, a serious performer, and a class act
