    Simplicity vs Fairness

It is all just context. Elmsley / Jordan / OPEC counts are typically four for four counts (with or without a displacement to set up the next phase). Hamman counts are typically used to either conceal blocks of cards or conceal a block of additional cards. Despite being called counts, the main...

    Outdated magic

I'd argue that the trick isn't inherently sexist. I've performed it for my parents in-law and they found it funny.:) If you follow a simple rule of treating your spectators and volunteers with respect, you are fine. The same could be said about how to treat other people in life.

    Outdated magic

Examples? Because I'm having a hard time coming up with anything that is racist or sexist.

    Outdated magic

Agree. Most of the routines were never that good. I also have read a couple routines with videotapes. Disagree. While a lot of rope magic wasn't good to begin with, there is some good stuff out there. You just have to make it relevant. I do a lot with Scouting, so I can relate to tying...

    Organic Book Recommendations

@Sodapop, do you have this book? If so, what effects do you recommend? Unfortunately, Art of Astonishment is mostly cards, then coins and then objects like shoes, oranges, etc. Second the recommendation.

    Marketplace Rejection

In that case, I would guess that it's been done before (if it is a simple move) OR the effect isn't yours to teach (if the move is unique and marketed by someone else).

    Marketplace Rejection

The only way any of us can give you a sense of the originality of your submissions is to see a performance video. Feel free to post them in the forums or send me links via a "conversation" and I'd be glad to give you a sense of their originality. But you may be reinventing ideas that others...

Question about a Harry Anderson routine

I've got a couple of different suggestions for you to choose from: The first is to get a subscription to Genii Magazine. With an electronic only subscription, you get access to over 75 years of back issues. There is a lifetime of material there and a lot of variety from Cards and Coins to...

Question about a Harry Anderson routine

I love the history of magic and take any chance I get to have fun with it. A couple of questions.... Which effects did you like the most from Mark Wilson's complete course in magic? What setting do you want to perform in -- close-up sitting, close-up standing (a.k.a. "street magic"), parlor...

Question about a Harry Anderson routine

I did a little bit of digging and confirmed my hunch. In his Penguin Live Lecture, Harry Anderson credited the effect to U.F. Grant's Million Dollar Bill Mystery that was published in Volume 3 of the Tarbell Course in Magic in 1943 (it was not in the original Tarbell lessons). Mark Wilson's...

Question about a Harry Anderson routine

That is a possible method (and you could accomplish the effect this way), but I think he was using a different method that works better when you have two bills.

How good should a card magican be after 3 monthes

So for those who didn't realize it (other than @Scodischarge who did pick up on it), this list was not serious... My point is there isn't any right way or wrong way to learn. My actual suggestion is to learn effects that you can perform (and the accompanying sleight of hand) and then perform...

    Which sleights use Retention?

Exactly. Which provides "cover" for the "force" applied and lead to an assumption that the object is in the hand.

What is your favorite Triumph routine?

I do a variation of Theodore Deland's Inverto and a tabled riffle shuffle version inspired by Reversable Cards fromEncyclopedia of Card Tricks. An easy, in-the-hands version is Francis Carlyle's Upside Down Deck which can be found in Scarne on Card Tricks. My other favorites are Bannon’s Play...

    Which sleights use Retention?

Retention of vision is the optical illusion, continuation of motion (inertia) is the mental conclusion. They are mutually reinforcing.

    Which sleights use Retention?

I think that most of them have been covered. Vanishes of coins, sponge balls, cups & balls, billiard balls and card vanishes rely on the retention of vision. In cups & balls, there are some more advanced vanishes that rely a similar principle to be convincing - the continuation of motion...
