Not bad at all. Being something of a connoisseur of ACAAN effects (I use it at every gig and every performance), the only thing I don't like about it is that the cards are dealt face down (Like Ben Harris' CRACAAN). Much rather be able to deal them face up. Aside from that, it looks like a pretty clean version.

I agree completley. With proper audience management and good presentation skills there would be no doubt in peoples minds that this was a regular deck because to them all your tricks were done with the "same" deck which they have shuffled and seen to be normal ;)......... So in essence your leaving them with the exact memory you want them to have... You asked them to name a card, a number between 1 and 52 and the card was found in that position (in a normal deck)

This version is quite nice however there is a hell of a lot going on behind the scenes that you do not see, making it not as performable as it appears to be.

Dont get me wrong it is still an amazing method but you have to be prepared to perform it, and it is more elaborate than a stacked deck or two.

Praetoritevong,

Since you are a connoisseur of ACAAN effects--which one do you think is the best AND is commerically available?

Two of the best I've come across are:

The CAAN from Mnemonica (page 82). It uses a memorized deck but it's very clean. The whole thing is a mental calculation and a pass. That's it. Spectator names any card and any number and they count out the cards the face up.

Barry Richardson's impromptu CAAN (subtitled "My Best Trick"). Impromptu, shuffled deck, very deceptive. Richardson provides some really clever misdirection to cover the few moves there are in the routine. Excellent solution to the CAAN effect.

I have read the version in mnemonica! its very good I agree although the demo video is slightly misleading...I also use Barry Richardson's version allot myself! Fantastically thought out!

The one I perform is a personal mix of some half a dozen or so different routines whose methods I've combined. Mostly because I can't pass for crap :P

The Mnemonica CAAN is a good building block. If you start from there using that principle, you can combine several other card magic principles to make the workings easier. Also, as mentioned above, I prefer to not pass, so there are different ways to get around that.

Barrie Richardson's is very good as well, and as far as completely FASDIU ACAAN effects, is right up there.

I have a few different methods for ACAAN/CAAN effects however a nice one that I am very very fond of is Patrick Redfords one. The impromptu one as the spectator can deal the cards and there is only one real move.

Seconded re: Patrick Redford. And yes, John Born has a good book on the subject. I think the presentation discussion was most useful to me. We have this brilliant, legendary effect, but it's useless if we don't present it right.

That's the thing Prae I cannot really present the effect for the life of me. It just not really fit my character, and every time I present it it comes off a little tricky.

I currently do Barrie Richardson's CAAN. When it comes to commercial card work, I heavily rely on no set up, anytime anywhere approach and Barrie Richardsons's Impormptu CAAN is the best I have come across.

Is says in the write-up that Redford's ACAAN a stage version... Can this be done 1 on 1 let's say in a pub for example? Or are you talking about Fantasie Impromptu (CAAN) here?
Thanks

I was talking about the Impromptu one however the Stage one could also be done one on one. However it suffers one of the two biggest flaws that are present in almost all ACAAN or CAAN effects. The 'fantasy impromptu' however does not.
