A Mental Effect I'm Conjuring Up

I am thinking about a 52 on 1 trick with a super large card. I was thinking that instead of just having one person choose a card, and me revealing it, would this work....

Using a few different forces, have 5 or 6 people remember a card.

Have one central person choose a card, and take it out (don't look at it, just hold it face down)

Talk about how everyone has chosen a card, and is thinking of it, and I made a prediction.

Tell them the reason I had a lot of people choose a card is because that betters MY chance of my prediction matching one of them (should get a good laugh)

I turn the card around and show how I have amazingly glued their card to the back of the huge card (There are 52 cards glued on there)

I say how amazing that was and say on three I want everyone to yell their card so everyone else will now that I did manage to predict everyones card!

They all yell the same card!

The main girl turns over her card, and it is the SAME CARD.

I open the prediction, and it is a huge version of the SAME CARD!

comments? anywhere I should revise this? I think this could be fun!!

sounds simple and delivers big. I remember you and I talking about a similar trick where you give ''different'' cards to people and then you get them to all say there cards at once, and then they all had picked the same card

I do a multiple selection force as opposed to a single card force on several people. I find that, if you utilize the force a bit too much, and have too many open predictions about it, it turns into a "wow, he caused us all to choose the same card," rather than, "how did we all manage to choose the same card." In order to avoid this, I side step around it.

I say that I am going to do a prediction, but instead of one card, I will predict four. I have four cards chosen but not looked at, just placed face down in their hands. I then take a look at my prediction card and give a "puzzled" look to the audience. After about 5 - 10 seconds, I say, "Please forgive me, I think I made a mistake with my prediction. I will actually do the prediction later. I am going to do a four ace trick instead." I then have the spectators turn their cards face up onto the table as they give them back, and they are the four aces.

What if I do this:

There will be me, and the main girl on the stage, and some people in the studio audience. I tell them that a few nights ago I had a strange sense of 3 cards. Tell them that I took those 3 cards out of another deck taped them on the back of my poster as a prediction.

Have 3 of the people in the studio audience select cards and keep them face down in their hands. Force a card on the main girl. Say that I taped the 3 cards on the back of this, and then got worried that they wouldn't be the right prediction so...... *turn poster around*....I taped every card from a 52 card deck onto the back to make FOR SURE that I got their cards right.

This gets a good laugh hopefully.

Then I say that the reason I had the main girl select a card was that I had a sense of ANOTHER card after I taped the whole deck on the back. I say that THIS time, I decided to stick with the card I got a sense of. I ask her to look at her card and show everyone. I open the poster to show that it matches her card!

How about a one way deck for the first idea that you put. That way you don't have to worry about a way to force a card, or if the force is going to look the same. And IMHO doing different forces for each person looks more suspicious than doing the same one. Just think about it, if their selection were free, you wouldn't do it in 7 different ways, right?

Ok... let a crass old guy give you a quick dash of cold water on this topic.

HINT: If you are using playing cards in this demonstration it WILL be viewed as a CARD TRICK NOT "Mentalism"

I know there are a lot of recovering magicians out there who've yet woken up to the truth and before you scream "But Dunninger did it..." stop and consider just how different things were in those times. I can assure you, people were far more "innocent" and less aware when it came to deception and how they would equate things to occultish phenomena. Not so much these days. That is why the first rule of thumb by the majority of real world dyed in the wool mentalists is to REPLACED the playing cards with some other kind of "card stock" -- index cards, post cards, photos... ANYTHING BUT PLAYING CARDS! If however, they do incorporate cards watch what they do; the majority will present bits in which we actually have the audience or participant visualize a card in their mind and then have it show up in some manner, typically as a prediction... you can even do this with something akin to Card @ Any Number if desired. The goal however, is minimizing any contact or exhibition with the cards themselves so as to distance one's self from the idea of being a magician.

The use of cards in mentalism is a long drawn out debate BUT, I've not left a single mentalism show in the past 35 years in which I didin't hear patrons mention "that amazing card trick he did" vs. viewing such things as some mindblowing bit of precognition or clairvoyance, etc. No association to any form of mental prowess esoteric or scientific and so, the layman will go with the route of least resistence in their logic tying you to the world of stage magic and parlor tricks.

MY QUESTION: Is this how you wish to be percieved?

If so or, if it doesn't matter to you, why are you fooling yourself into thinking your card tricks are "Mentalism" when they aren't? Why don't you just be content in the role of "Magician" and stop poisoning the world of Mentalism? Willingly and respectfully segregating the two (as it has been for generations) so that you, as the magician have your various advantages (psychologically and otherwise) while the Mentalists & Bizarrists have the same.

The approach and psychology of the two categories conflict; especially if you are of the old school mind set and seeking to exploit the idea of realism, such as you'll see in John Riggs, Jerome Finley, Richard Webster and a handful of others that come to mind.

Ok.. no more soap box. I just hope you'll think about it.

Still a bit confused... what's the point of having those other 3 people in the audience choose cards? I thought that you put all 52 cards from a diff deck onto the poster? Do you make them all disappear and put on her one chosen card somehow?

Sorry, just a little bit confused..

I tell them that on the back of the poster is a prediction. I have the 3 people in the audience choose cards, and then force the card on the main girl. I tell the people in the audience that I got nervous about whether my prediction would be correct or not so I turn the card around and say I just put every card out of a deck of cards to make for SURE that I got the cards they chose on there.

This is just a joke hopefully they will laugh.

Then I say well I wasn't too sure if that would impress y'all, so that is why I had her choose a card. I tell her to show everyone the card she chose. I tell them that I made one more prediction, and this time for real. I open the poster to show it matches her card!

ahhh so the three cards being picked is purely for ****s and giggles? I personally wouldn't make them all three cards then say it.. waste of time? So, on one side there are 52 cards, and on the other, a dupe of the card you forced on her?

Nah when I unfold the card, the poster is like a whole huge card in itself, ya know? I drew it out on the poster. And the first three cards yes are just for fun, just to get some laughs, and kindof add to the presentation...they are ready for a prediction to be correct, I let them down, and then BAM, giant prediction. Lol

It sounds quite nice, and by all means try it, but you need to make sure that people realise the first three cards are just for a joke. If you're not careful, you might have people impressed by the big reveal, but still wondering when their card's going to be revealed, which would make the end lose it's tension and effect somewhat. This is based on experience; I used to do a trick involving several people selecting a number, and I ended up revealing one of the numbers. As long as people know that the rest of the cards are just there for the humour, it sounds pretty good. Just something to bear in mind.
