Perhaps you should start with a smaller convention. Magic-Con has about 300 attendees, and it is a really great atmosphere. The convention is held in a Hilton DoubleTree Inn, and there is really no need to leave the hotel. You could also decide on a convention and find someone on the forums that is going to that convention and buddy with him/her (probably her) at the convention, if you're worried about safety. These are just a few ideas, because I don't think anyone should miss out on a good magic convention.

I'd look around for some magic clubs and organizations in your area and start making friends there. Then once you find a few people you trust and relate to you might plan to go as a group. Trips are always fun as a group :)

If there is a Magic club near by, sometimes they do small con's that essentially the size of a local swap meet where a few names in magic show up to sell DVDs and whatnot. Those might be a bit easier on you.

Ash,
Our magic convention is smaller (200-250) in Canton, Ohio. It is called the Battle of Magicians and is outstanding. How far are you from Canton? I can send you the flier or provide you the link if you'd like. Let me know. It is a very safe and friendly environment. It is coming up here May 3, 4, & 5.

There is a schedule and everything posted.

The 3 Reed Sisters normally attend every year. If you do not know who they are....Google The Reed Sisters, magic or anything similar to that.

Like I've stated before I have always wanted to be around the magic and theatre arts more than I am at this point in my life. If i ever were to go to a magic convention, I don't know who I would go with, basically my boyfriend is busy getting his life together and so am I, and I can't just go to a convention by myself as thats not safe... how does a girl like myself get to experience magic conventions when I have no one to help me out? Rudy Coby did invite me to Magic vs Science and I would have loved to have gone, but things in my life at the moment aren't ideal for my magic muse and frankly I don't know if they ever will be.

There is nothing wrong with going to a convention by yourself...but since you are a female magician...you are probably going to be hit many times...by male magicians..to be honest is rare to see female magicians in the magic scene..let alone magic conventions...anyway I think you can just go and behave normally... I think they are pretty safe since it´s like any other event...you go to lectures, buy stuff, met people and have a good time... and you could leave whenever you want.... you could ask a friend to go with you...or talk to a friend an met there...

Luis brings up a valid argument Ash which your boyfriend may be not so sure about....you will get A LOT of attention because there might be 195 males and only about 5 females....ha ha. Sorry to say but that is how it is at these things.

This will be true, yes. For the most part. However, if you do go to a magic convention and you take you and your magic seriously, there will be no shortage of magicians willing to help and discuss magic with you without rest until the convention ends. You might have to sort through some lonely magician types for sure, but it's not everyone and people will take you seriously as a female entertainer/magician.

I might be biased living here in San Diego, but I think Magic-con is one of the best 'conventions' I've ever been to, simply because Syd and the Buck Twins stay very true to their goal of having a magic 'conference' instead of a 'convention'. The speakers are always walking and relaxing around the lobby during the breaks, and are always very approachable. It's a very safe learning environment for people of all skill levels.
