Beginner Displays

Hey guys, I have just started XCM (first week) and was wondering if you guys know any good 6-9 packet displays that look really sweet, but aren't too hard. I can do the WERM and stuff like that, but something like DAMN STRAIGHT by KEVIN HO is a bit too hard for me to work out, or is DAMN STRAIGHT an easy one as well?

Thanks,

Sanj

Well if you're only a week in you'll need to learn more before you start creating cuts yourself...but after you open the Werm I found it easy to pull packets and in turn made a 8-9 packet Werm. I don't know any other beginner displays...but if you play around with a cut (especially a display) you can easily create your own (I just decided to play with a Werm display last night and made one :D).

I think twicking the werm is a pretty basic thing to do. Sure you'll drop cards and what not but at least you can get an overall idea of what can be done. Then just practice it and before you know it you'll have a bigger display.

Daniel Madison's Lethal x is very nice 7 packet display... It is in the Motion dvd. I'm a beginner too and i can do it (not very smoothly)

To be honest I think Lethal X is too hard for a one week flourisher. It's not the hardest thing I've ever seen, but still... Not to say that it's easy, and it does take some work as with all things on Motion.

Hey there MagicSanj,

How long have you been handling cards? As in, how long have you been doing magic, cardistry, flourish, etc...?

I ask this because if this is your first week with a deck of cards you should practice simple simple things. These simple tasks will create a building block (similar to a buildings foundation or a cards frame) to use and create stronger flourishes.

For example, simple things like a swing cut, double undercut, Charlier Cut, etc... help for future effects. Also styles in holding the deck, angles, simple lifts, and just plain fiddling with the deck teachers things that videos cannot even touch.

Lemme know how long, I would love to provide more information for you :)

Hey, Thanks MR. MOO,

If you have an aim or windows live it would be more helpful to talk there. I have been handling cards for about 2 years, and usually I look at a cardistry DVD and I watch it and say, "wow that looks too hard," then I try it, and I can't even come close to doing it. I have THE SYSTEM, MOTION, and some De'Vo stuff and the only thing I can do is the WERM... not even a sybil :(

Fair warning SanJ, Flourishing takes a lot of time and practice. Don't be discouraged! Learn some of the basic flourishing moves and then develop from there. Trying to tackle harder moves first will only frustrate you to tears. If you have Xtreme Beginners that would be a great place to start off. Perhaps not everything but at least some of the things that appeal to you.

After that I'd move into some harder things such as things on The System, Motion etc. Give it time, you'll see yourself slowly getting better and better. Again though, don't be discouraged... though something is frustrating and you'll drop a ton of cards don't let that keep you from practicing it!

Indeed, couldn't have said it better myself. I am afraid this may be your dilemma. The thing about cardistry and flourishing is it takes ages to learn something that looks so simple, and sometimes not so simple. I want you to push your personal limits! I have a challenge for yourself.

Find a display you have always wanted to do, whether it be molecule, werm, or another advanced flourish. Get the tutorial and learn how to do it. Now I want you to practice for one month. Thats it, simple enough, eh? Once you know how to do it practice nothing more then that display. Spend a few hours a day practicing this. When you start getting frustrated and continue to fail at a part of a trick stop, put the deck down, go do something you enjoy, and go back to it later once your mind is NOT on the cards. Sometimes even a good nights sleep works wonders.

Some tips I have are the following -
-Use a durable, reliable deck. Something on the lines of Tally-ho may do just fine. Just make sure you keep them in decent shape so you don't get used to cards clumping.
-Take breaks, you may get frustrated... I know I sure do.
-Perfect little parts at a time. Everything is a process. How do you eat a large pizza? One small piece at a time. That is exactly how you will conquer this display.

Please keep me and others well informed on what your plans are. We would also all love to know your status on the effect.

The real question is, are you game?

Love Moo!

Only one thing I would add to Mr. Moo's challenge.... as a tip. Is practice the flourish slowly, I know options tend to differ on this a bit. Most seem to agree that slow is the way to go and speed develops with it.
