In many ways it was the stage magic of old (along with Pepper's Ghosts and other Blue Room type bits).
@ Formula. . . "Better" is a matter of perspective; in the case of Pasha we are seen an enactment of a traditional black art program not something that was necessarily designed as a commercial production (though it certainly could be). I've seen a ton of great Black Art work and even ended up with a huge stage show featured at a major theme park that was a combination of Black Art and "Black Light" Theater (the two are similar but there's a few nuances that actually improve upon the Black Art side of things).
One of the neatest Black Art bits I'm aware of is Dean Hankey's "Magic Hands Theater" -- just two white gloves in a box. . .
