Hey guys, I am mostly into card magic and I was just wondering what effects or books/ dvds you guys think would work well in a restaurant setting? I have a few solid routines that never get just okay reactions that are good for restaurants and i would like to work on more; so if you could just point me in the right direction that would be great.

Thanks

I actually prefer Jay Sankey's DVD. Real work on restaurants. It has a lot of hard hitting routines that aren't very hard to do if you have a basic knowledge of card magic.

In my opinion, David Stone's DVDs are much better than the Sankey DVD. I just found a lot of the material to be...not magical and quite tedious.

Just my opinion but David Stone's has a variety of real world tricks that get reactions while Sankey uses things found (not always) on the table.

Has anyone mentioned the David Stone DVD's yet??? WTF - guys, what is wrong with you all? Adding nothing new...just adding to the thread by agreeing with the guy above you. Brilliant! This should be considered thread bumping.

Here is the thing Chrystal, there are many sources that would be good for restaurant stuff...but aren't necessarily focused on restaurant material.

I have found things in Paul Harris' books, Gary Kurtz, Darwin Ortiz...etc....

However, if you are looking for something specific:

Michael Close books or videos called "The Worker's Series" has some great stuff and advice

Paul Wilson's video - "The Restaurant Act", talks about routining, and will help expand what you offer.

Jogn Guastaferro has his Brainstorm videos - cool stuff on them, very commercial

Michael Ammar - Easy to Master Card Miracles...there is a reason these things are popular, GREAT magic - and if you read the credits and listen to Ammar between tricks...you will actually learn something you don't get on most videos...THEORY!

Mark Leveridge has a DVD called "The Art of Table Hopping", he discusses everything from pocket space...to the tricks he does - some cool stuff!

OH - I ALSO HEAR THAT DAVID STONE HAS A DVD FOR RESTAURANT WORKERS! Seriously...WTF

The ironic thing for me is, as much as I perform in restaurants, most of my tricks have come from things you NEVER imaging performing in a restaurant. A trick where there is a lengthy set up, etc. But, I've changed it up to get rid of that set up and make it instant reset, without losing any of the core parts to the effect.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but West Coast Conjurors has a great trick on there for performing in a restaurant. The card to picture frame is awesome, and the ring on rope routine isn't half bad either. Greg Wilson has some great effects as well, that are perfectly suitable for a restaurant setting. You just have to pick and choose is all.

For me, when I spend money on magic, I look at what I can use. Even if I spend $35 on a dvd and use 1 trick on there, it's been money well spent. :)

Good Luck!
Steve

Thank you Morgician. Maybe a bit harsh but thanks. I cant make an informed decision if I only get one referral. Also thank you Steve Simmons.

What dvds / books that you guys mentioned do you think has the most about routining or the most GOOD effects that could be put into a good routine together?

Jim Pace's restaurant workers handbook I do not have it but it seems like a good book. Hope this helps.

My two favorite dvds on the subject of restaurant magic are both by Jay Sankey. His "Real Work on Restaurants and Bars" dvd is very solid, and touches on the major points of performing in a restaurant quite well. I also think there is some excellent "A" material on there as well. The Blackpool effect is worth the price of the dvd alone!!

Secondly is Front Row Sankey. Not only does it show Jay performing for real people in a restaurant, but that too has some kick ass material! Full Lotus is an incredible effect! One of the best transpo effects I've seen to date!! :D

Good Luck!

No problem Chrystal - I agree...you can't make an informed decision if 20 posts all say exactly the same thing, and don't add anything.

All the books I mentioned cover the topic well - the guys after me (above me on this one) made some good suggestions too.

It isn't a quick fix Chrystal, you have been given some options - but you will have to do the research and see what sticks...these can all be bad suggestions if the effects are out of your grasp or don't fit your style.
