Cards at School and other casual venues

I wondering if you guys have any tips on how to bring out a deck of cards out casually without seeming like a geek that carries cards around everywhere he goes. I am more of a beginner in magic and haven't really performed for anyone outside my immediate family. I do mostly card magic.

Believe it or not, I take my deck of cards and perform for them at first glance.

So, if you want to perform for them, try a couple of flourishes and this will bring attention. Eventually, people want to approach up to you and ask if you do magic. Then, you just start your routine. Once everyone knows about this, you will feel comfortable approaching up to them. Hope it helps you.

It's like most people and their credit cards...I don't leave home with out at least one deck of cards, a few rubber bands and some kind of coin trick.

Doing the card flourishes is good. I also do a coin roll to grab attention. The little kids love the blind mans hand cuffs.

To me it's ok to bring out the cards and don't feel like a geek just because you have cards on you. How would you feel if you were talking about magic but couldn't show anyone because you left your cards at home.

Hope that helps you...

I am a nerd, and proud of it :)

Heya, I am the biggest nerd in my town of stupid people. Don't worry about busting out the cards. I never leave the house without them, even to walk my puff ball of a dog. :D I gather attention by doing flourishes too. Tip: Don't look like you are really focused on the flourish because then spectators won't want to bother you and strike up a conversation. Don't worry about looking like a nerd if you bust out the cards. If you are good at magic or good at the tricks you show, you will be the opposite of a nerd by the end.

The best way to be good at any trick is PRACTICE.

Make a deck appear.
Yes, there's a great way to do this using a jacket (if you wear jackets at school, for example, we in Russia do). You can watch and learn it in David Stone's "Real Secrets of David Stone". By the way, pupils at school here aren't allowed to bring the deck of cards to school (even if you are magician, that drives me crazy).

My response is that while you are out with friends, just be out with friends. Don't pull out a deck, just enjoy the social environment. But, if you are like me, you will notice that there are sometimes where it is just easier to be by yourself (don't spend too much time by yourself, because then you are just the weird kid in the corner with a deck of cards). During those times, bust it out and do some flourishes. People will notice and it will open up doors.

Although I really don't perform at school that often, people know me as a magician, so it's almost expected of me that I carry around cards, coins, etc. I have had teachers request several times that I perform for the rest of class time because we got done with stuff early and didn't have anything else to do. If I didn't carry around cards with me, I would have been screwed.

You could have said no.

I used to carry cards around with me all the time before, bu have all but stopped now. If I have a certain idea I'm brainstorming, I'll have a deck with me, so I can perform it to myself before I forget, but generally I don't.

Silver Ace, just perform a lot. At first, you might feel a bit weird, but soon you'll get a reputation as a magician, and then it becomes a lot easier to perform under your terms. That's the best I can think of right now, due to being pretty damn tired, but if I think of anything to add, I'll be back tomorrow.

That's a valid point, and I would have had I not had some things on me. I could have done a few effects with stuff around the classroom, but nothing that was good enough, in my opinion, for a whole performance. I also wouldn't want to pass up an opportunity to perform, so I'm glad I did have a deck of cards, a Stealth Pen, etc. on hand.
