Hey everyone!
I have something to share that happened to me some days ago.
first a backstory: Around 6 years ago I meet a guy in a party and told me his uncle was a magician and he was sure he would love to meet me.. so he arranged a meeting at his house... and then I meet this very old magician... a very old school magician! If I am being honest I felt a little sad because of how he lived and how he seemed to never achieve something BIG in magic (I was different at that time... I didn´t understand that we all have differente goals in life, but more on that later) and overall it was a good experience... I showed him a lot of modern magic and he showed me some videos of him performing. it was a nice visit, but overall I feel a little bit sad and let down to see a magician end like that...
6 years later:
I was minding my own bussiness and then I received a call. it was this guy and he told me that his uncle went through some surgery and he was feeling very down and he thought maybe a magic show would cherish him so he ask me if I could perform a private show for him at his house. We agreed on a price and I decided to prepare the show with both modern and classic magic.
The Gig
I arrive a little bit early at his house and he received me (the guy) and told me he was expecting me and also if there was no issue of me performing for more people that day (originally it was going to be only 3 people. this guy, his wife and the magician) and I told him that as long everyone is wearing masks, I could do it... in the end the show was for 7 people.
I got to his room and to my surprise (good surprise btw) there was his family with him... I feel they really loved him and where there to see his reaction to the show... the magician was in a hospital bed with serums and conected to some machines, but overall he look good...
I performed the show as planned and everything went great... and this is what I wanted to share with you:
I performed the trick with the book "Sherlock" the one that its sold here, the one that is a book test... I ask for the guy (he knows english) and I performed and everything went great and when it was the time to reveal the word... I FAILED... it wasn´t the word the spectator was thinking, maybe he didn´t understand the instructions or I didnt explained myself clearly... the point is that I failed (if the trick fails... the spectator has no fault.. it was your fault to be honest) and I brush it off like sometimes one misses to read the mind.. etc... everybody just agreed to it and we decided to move on...
Then it happened...
the magician started to clap!! I was so surprised... and he told everyone that is the effort that counts and that he was happy how I handled it... and then everyone clapped!... it almost shed a tear on my eye... I have never expected such chivalry from him... not because I think he is not a nice person.. but because I myself wouldn´t clap to a magician that failed a trick (I wouldnt give him a hard time to be honest... but I wouldnt clap)
In the end it was a great show... I gave the magician one of my Artisans deck to keep and we had a good time... and I reflected on the gesture of the magician and how, while I didnt think he was a "great" magician... he was a great person... maybe even better than me, for understanding these things... and also it was great to see him surrounded of people that loves him...
