Close-up on Letterman

I wouldn't consider it rude - that was not the feeling that Steve got nor Ammar when I was there earlier this week. When people ask me if I thought Dave sounded sarcastic or if he tried to have a witty response to everything - I would say hell yes! That's who Letterman is. He's not just a spectator in this case - he is the host of the show. As such, he remains active and involved. If anything, he's a sort of co-participant in the performance. Does that mean he is rude? I don't think so. It certainly doesn't make him an easy audience, but as Steve demonstrated last night, those factors can be overcome to achieve a memorable, powerful, fun performance. I thought Steve knocked it out of the park.

On Ammar's performance tonight, you'll see him perform Pressure and two other short effects. I thought Ammar did a great job. Even Ashton Kutcher was still going on about Pressure 5 minutes after the performance ended. That is a good sign - it was memorable and unique. And I think it was good, fun TV.

We'll be posting the extended interview (10 minutes long) with Ammar tonight right after the broadcast.

That is a good point... it is his show and everything i am just not use to "TV" people acting like just some other spectator i guess.

Can not wait for Ammar!!

I don't know if u guyz realized but there was a HUgE flash when one of the performers were performing ... not saying who though ...

the camera angles provided tons of flashes. which amazes me how few there were. if i were on letterman the camera would catch every move and tivo would be slowing down my classic pass. and all kids of sick things.

i tried not to see them the first time i watched it, then i watched it with my family, and i saw too many, kind of ruined the performances for me. thats why i refuse to watch cohens performance again.

Ammar did great!

Too bad Dave asked to see the scarf. Perhaps, instead of saying no, he should have redirected. Not sure if it would have worked, but it may have turned out better. Also with pressure, the popping ending he chose to use, left a visual inconsistency that Dave picked up on (hence his theory).
His ***** work is amazing, and his little hand is the funniest thing.
Fantastic performance (of course). Great Job Michael.

For those who may have not yet seen it, we posted our extended video interview with Ammar last night in the media section. It's 10 minutes long and touches on his thoughts on this week, his performance, his material selection, and more:

I don't think that had anything to do with Letterman's theory. How does an incorrect theory relate to a visual inconsistency anymore than an incorrect theory without a visual inconsistency would? Laymen come up with zany explanations all the time with how they think something works. Honestly, I don't think anyone, including Letterman, took notice at all. I think the only reason you picked up on it is because you know how the effect works.

I thought Ammar did great, as was expected. He picked good effects, came across likable and confident, and didn't seem intimidated. He also did effects that were outside the box of what most people would expect from a magician, and just overall came across cool.

Ammar and Cohen really took advantage of their national TV time and made their appearances stand out. The other three--not so much. It was a fun week to follow though.

I hear what you're saying, and generally I agree. And perhaps what he saw had nothing to do with his theory, but if you think about what he saw, his theory actually makes (possible) sense. Whether or not it was true, doesn't really matter. His theory makes sense for what he experienced. Does that eliminate the magic of it? Perhaps the way of preventing that would be simply to let him examine the balloon first.

What Letterman said about pressure was clearly a joke he threw in because he really did think it was amazing.

I mean, a trapdoor in a balloon, Isn´t that pretty funny?

I think Ammar did the best of them this week, why? Because he was different from what people expect from magicians and he was very calm and seemed like a normal guy.

Also he did pick the right material for tv. Carney, Palmer and the other guy that were performing the first day did material with WAY to many moves that they had to be nervous about and they had the right to be because they flashed and things were not really going that smooth for them all the time.

To be fair, David said a "secret compartment". And he was serious when he said it. He really believed that.

But I agree that Ammar did a great job. Steve didn't get busted on anything. The only problem was that he had a lot of moves (but even so, they were all justified).

No idea why people are saying the first three weren't that good. I thought Carney was one of the best (besides Ammar). He was hilarious, amazing, casual, and he didn't seem nervous at all. Also a great lesson in misdirection, even when all the angles are against you.

I really didn't like Steve at all. The effect itself was amazing, but his performance was blah. He wasn't even close to as entertaining as Carney or Ammar. Yea he was amazing, but entertaining? Not really. I'm sure most people will disagree, but that's what I thought.

Cheers

maybe ammar could of let david see the balloon?? but then again he didnt let me see the scarf so idk.

i heard the little hand trick in a book and was like o_O thats weird ... it was GREAT to see it done by a professional!! that was an AWESOME WEEK!!!

the little hand is the brainchild of Bob Farmer. I am sure Ammar gives him credit, I just wanted to make sure he got it here on the forum

Taken from Ammar's site:

The Little Hand was featured on The Late Show with David Letterman on May 21, 2010.

An amazingly animated little arm reaches way out to snatch a coin - then disappears completely!

Concept by Bob Farmer.*

Wrapping-up Magic on Letterman

On Sunday night we recorded our wrap-up of Letterman's Close-up Magic Week with Theory 11's own Jonathan Bayme, David Kaye and Late Show performer Steve Cohen. We were also joined by an unexpected guest at the end of the show who also performed this week on Letterman. It was fun having JB, Steve, David and everyone involved discuss the experience. Thanks again to JB and everyone that made time in their schedules to chat. I hope that you enjoy listening : http://bit.ly/TWiMCohen
