Collapsing Marble Myth

In the art AOA book volume 2 by Paul Harris, he talks about the idea of putting a marble on an eye dropper bottle, and then the marble visibly gets smaller and smaller until it drops into the bottle. He said that he did away with the effect because he couldn't get it to work. Has anyone tried to get this effect to work successfully because it sounds pretty cool?

I agree, maybe ice or what Chris said about the polymer marble! Those are the best options, actually ice would probably be too cold for your spectator to check it out! That last sentence was obvious!:p

Hmm with a bit of work on the handling, I'm sure "Rubber Bubbles" could do the trick, and also not be too far from the original method. Maybe PH has played with this idea allready, as we know he is fully aware of the use of rubber bubbles in effects.

Hope I'm not exposing anything here

It sounds like a very cool idea. Hands-off I don't see anyway of getting it done but of course my imagination is limited with this idea. To rest a marble on an Eye dropper you'd probably need a modified dropper, or cut part of the top off with scissors. Possibly switch from a totally hands-off handling to resting a large marble and passing the hands in front to make it medium, and once again smaller. Then maybe use a tap on the table to get the smaller marble in. I believe it could be done but it would be greatly difficult to have an examinable eye-dropper in the end.

Check it out in the later pages of the A.O.A. book 2, and read PH' original method for the marble mystery, you will be completely gobsmacked at the method.

Sorry, just thought I would say this as seeing PH's method, will help you broaden the way you think about this whole "puzzle" so to speak.

I will take a look. Thanks.

..... I just looked it over, it seems impossible but who knows? Maybe a drop of food coloring could help in some way? The clearness to me is what seems to pass it off as a Myth rather than an actual piece of magic. Most people would most likely know what they're looking at.

Thanks for the interesting read.

I actually love this effect and perform it for friends at my house every so often! I wouldn't say it's a worker as it COULD go 'wrong' at any second, but I like to do it as a casual thing, set it up as a stunt rather than a magic moment, then if it works, it looks all the more impressive!
