Originality exists.
It may be hard to find, but it exists without a doubt.
There are numerous DVDs, Books, Magazines, Forums, Manuscripts, Articles about magic. There are countless material in these things.
What one find new, another may find age old.
Being able to create something original is very hard. You may think you have created the next rising card or color change, but then only to find that the concept has been thought of before.
I find the only way to find originality is to ask someone who has never seen anything of the art. Go up to someone who hasnt seen much of our art before and ask them what a good effect will be. They may give you something farfetched, but Im pretty sure it will be original.
As a magician, i find it extremely hard to create something original. I have created a new rising card a while back only to see Nestor Hato publish it later on. I have realised that its not much of the matter of who creates it first, but rather who markets it first. The first person to do so is the one who gets the recognition. Some of you may disagree and find that marketing seems like a selfish and self centred thing. But if you have something new and want recognition for it, then market it. That is the only way you can be the "first".
